I’m sorry. Would you consider oral immunotherapy? DD has been doing it since February and we are very happy with the results so far. She has a peanut allergy. PM me if you want to chat about it.

@Adira: Does that happen a lot?? To 'regress' like that?

@Adira: Our regular allergist doesn’t either so I go to someone who does offer it. It doesn’t really need FDA approval. There’s no medication involved. It’s down to the individual doctor’s comfort level, training, and resources.

@Adira: Our insurance covers about 1/2. IgE of 44. She tested positive for a few tree nuts (blood and skin) when she was younger. Newer tests have come back negative, but we've only done oral challenges for almonds and pistachios thus far (she passed) so we still avoid most tree nuts.

@Adira: We have to travel to a different state for OIT. It’s common that a fair amount of travel time is required to reach an OIT doctor. If that’s not a possibility for you right now, keep checking the website. There will be more and more allergists who will offer it (hopefully) in the future.

@Adira: It varies by doctor. Our allergist does visits every 2 weeks. @T-Mom's does every week so her DD was done with peanut OIT super quick! I believe her doctor was also 3 hours away.

I'm so sorry to hear that outcome. I've had severe allergies my whole life, and they didn't do testing like this when I was little, but I will offer encouragement by saying that I didn't grow out of any allergies until I was around 8-9, when I suddenly grew out of a whole bunch of them (milk being the main one, which was fairly severe). So, there is still plenty of hope that he may not have to do this his whole life!

@Adira: I have absolutely zero advice or experience, just wanted to say sorry. That sucks. I know you were hoping for things to be trending the other way. At least we are in an area with great doctors who can really help, right?

LO1 had a similar result with peanuts. I don't recall the exact numbers, but his reaction worsened significantly. After his first exposure to peanuts at 1, he only broke out in hives and a dose of Benadryl did the trick. 1.5 year later, he went into anaphylactic shock.

Now he's 6 years old, and his numbers are going down. I still worry that he won't be able to grow out of it, but I'm holding onto hope that OIT may be an option for him.

May I join all you allergy mamas in here? I just got confirmation that my dd is allergic to peanuts and I'm so scared. We have an epipen now. She's only ever with me, dh, or my mom but I'm scared for if we go out to eat and she's accidentally exposed and when she enters public school - but we still have awhile until then.

@Adira: the pedi just said to keep peanuts away from her but that an allergist probably isn't necessary unless she has other reactions to other foods then we need further testing. I get annoyed sometimes by some of her old fashioned ways, but I am definitely going to keep pushing for a referral to an allergist (we have HMO so we have to go through the pedi for a referral). We only got the basic allergy blood test done, she's negative for walnuts but it doesn't list any other tree nuts.

@iluvboba637: Just chiming in here... I know these food allergies (esp the peanut one) can be terrifying, but like Adira said, the great thing is there is a lot more awareness about it now. OIT might also be worth looking into for the future. DD is just about to embark in an OIT program, so I have been blogging about it.

As for the wheat and soy, I thought numbers with kU/L <35 were considered "absent" (i.e. not allergic)? That's what it says on our blood test anyway. I would definitely stay away from the egg whites for now, and children are more likely to grow out of egg white allergies. I know quite a few babies that grew out of it, so there is hope there!

@Mrs. High Heels: @Andrea: Sorry to bump an old post @Adira , but we are starting OIT next week and I wondered if you all had any tips? It seems pretty straight forward!

Also for allergy moms - do you worry about heat and your epi pens in your diaper bag when you go to outdoor stuff (like the zoo)? How do you handle?

@LBee: That's interesting ... we're done with OIT but it's still recommended that we carry epi pens, just in case, so we do!

@Andrea: Good to know! There is a chance I misunderstood.

@iluvboba637: My daughter was 6. I believe our doctor requires you to be at least 5 years old, but this varies by doctor. I've heard of younger kids being treated in my Facebook groups.

And OIT 101 and Private Practice OIT are both very useful Facebook groups, for anyone who is interested!
