From the moment, we decided to move (less than a mile away from our old place) I thought we would only need movers (labor only) to help move the big stuff (bed, desks, couches) and we could *easily* move the small stuff. We ended up hiring the movers to come back and move our small stuff.
What really sucked was that our apartment was on the second floor. Those stairs are what killed us.
I don't ever want to move again.

We've always moved with help from friends. When we build our forever home in a few years, we will likely use movers because we will have accumulated so much stuff in our current house.

D and I have moved enough times to practically be pros, lol. We have it down to a science. Last time we moved my ILs helped, though, because I was 6 months pregnant and couldn't lift much.

When we move out of our condo in the future, we're hiring movers. Four years ago, we had friends help. Right after the move, DH said flat out that we're hiring movers. Now with massive amounts of baby stuff, movers are necessary.

@edelweiss: Thanks. Yeah, I really don't want to move again and if we move, hopefully, it will be for a relocation and they will pay to pack and move our stuff.
My sister told me she moved 8 times in the past 10 years. I don't know how she did it.

Hire movers. When we moved in together we hired movers for the big things-- couches, bed, tall bookcases-- and moved the rest ourselves, and it was dumb. For an extra hour or so of their time we could have saved ourselves half a dozen trips across down moving small amounts of stuff. This last move I was pregnant, too, and we had movers move everything. We packed everything except the TV, which they wrapped and padded. I hate moving but we are in an apartment that will only last us 2-3 years. Hopefully our next place will be a house that we buy and stay in but it's still up for debate!

I have moved x2. First was out of my parents 8 years ago, I didnt have much stuff and between my dd, bro and DH (then BF) I was moved. We moved last summer into a bigger house, and we hired. I lived in a 3 story condo, there was no way I was moving 2 beds, 3 dressers, desks etc, 3 couches, etc on our own! It was well worth the $600.

Movers; no matter the distance of the move. We're in our 30's/40's - we don't feel it's appropriate to ask friends to come over and help us move anymore. I'd rather just pay someone and have my friends over for a party after

We always hire movers. We made the mistake of moving everything ourselves in our first apartment back when we were married. It nearly killed us! We hired movers when we bought our first house right down the street. Best decision ever! Now, with all the stuff we've accumulated, there is absolutely no way we would even consider not hiring movers for our final move to our dream house, whenever that is.

Hire! Once DH and I started living together I decided I was too old to move myself. Next time I may even look into having someone pack for us, though not sure I would want to pay for it. I just hate packing/moving so much.

We always do it ourselves and our family helps. We definitely couldn't afford movers at this point in our lives, and my little brothers will do just about anything with a little incentive (pizza, anyone?!). Our apt was a PIA too - because it's second floor at the very END of the hall. It was brutal and I felt so badly for the guys. We're not looking to move out for a long time because it was so awful moving in!

we are just about to move ourselves. One friend is going to help. Movers aren't in the budget. Never had movers! I have literally moved by.my.self in the past! Like... carried furniture down the stairs!

We used to move ourselves, with the help of family. Our parents are all getting on in years (Mum passed away, all others around 60) and siblings no longer live in the area so the last two moves we've paid professionals. We still pack everything into boxes, but they are vastly more efficient at actually getting everything out of one house and into another; they are also not that expensive.

In the past six years we've done a 2 mile, a 160 mile and a 330 mile move...all by hiring a van ourselves and getting friends/family to help with the heavy items. Every time it's increasingly more difficult (especially as I was 7mths pregnant the last time!) and we keep saying next time we'll get professionals to move it all!

I've moved 8 times in the last 8 years, and our move last fall with LO was the first time we hired movers. I packed all our things, but we had three guys move everything. It was worth every single penny, and I won't ever move myself again.

anytime I've had furniture, I've hired movers! I lived in furnished dorms/apts in college and my first apartment out of college so I did all those moves with help from friends and/or family, but then the biggest things were just boxes so it was easier. Once I got my own furniture, I started hiring movers

@Greentea: I got some quotes for some movers and found a company that does just labor. They quoted me at $65/hr for two professional movers. They brought dollys, hand trucks and furniture pads. This company had great reviews on yelp. I had to get my own truck (I rented a uhaul for $50. With uhaul, you have to pay for miles, but ours was a close move, so it wasn't that bad. Oh, since we rented the truck, we were responsible for driving the truck. ). When I got them to come back to move my small stuff, I paid them $35/hr for one guy and we used his SUV and ours. I spent around $400 for labor (total with tip) but it was well worth it.
I then talked to other movers with a truck and it was $120/hr and it just didn't make sense to pay extra.
The other option is to hire the guys that stand outside of Home Depot. It's probably cheaper but I wanted to pay for someone who wouldn't bang up my walls or my furniture.

We're doing it with the help of family and friends, but I think in the future, we may pay someone to move the big stuff, depending on how much it is. We don't have very much stuff or a lot of heavy furniture right now, though, so it doesn't make much sense.

We're about to have our 6th move in our less than 5 year marriage, and we've long since decided that paying movers for everything is 100% worth it. For the move from CO to TN, his company even payed to have people pack for us, which was amazing. We wouldn't pay for that ourselves, but it was pretty great. And we will never move ourselves again unless we're suddenly super broke, and even then we might ask someone to pay for it as a bday/christmas gift.

When we moved into our current place we did it ourselves, but we had all of the big furniture delivered when we bought it. I will never move on my own again. I am not lugging that stuff anywhere - I'll pay movers and take any fragile stuff in my car.

Movers. In NYC you can hire a man with a van for teh cost of buying pizza for friends. I will never do my own moving again and I'm not helping friends either. It is an unnecessary PITA. The worst was when we had to move out of the brownstone we lived in. Try getting a couch down the stairwell of a brownstone without pulling few muscles

I used movers for the last move and can't go back. I always feel too guilty when I watch friends and family sweating, carrying my stuff around. So worth the money.
