@hellobeeboston: I never even knew there were books!! Are they easy to read?
honeydew / 7235 posts
@MrsMcD: hmm, easy to read? Yes? They are extremely long though, I can't remember exactly but I think they are all between 600 and 900 pages. But so so good!! He is supposedly writing 2 more! And it's taking forever, haha.

@hellobeeboston: I was laughing at my dumb comment asking if they are easy to read! I sound like a total dummy! I get enough challenging reads for my work, so I like easy reads at night. That's awesome. I'm seriously addicted to the show.

@hellobeeboston: I'm obsessed with Daenerys Targaryen.

OMG! That's exactly how I feel about the chapters. hahaha
I've read the first 3 and am trying to savour the last few because I just love them so much!

.....................There's a book series?!?!?!?!?!!? Where have I been??? I just love the TV show!
honeydew / 7235 posts
@MrsMcD: haha!! I wasn't sure what you meant! I think he tends to go on & on sometimes in the books an I will skim (like the chapters about Greyjoys/Reek) the last book left practically every storyline hanging so I can't wait... Supposedly he is almost done, then there will be one more!

I'm obsessed with these books!
@mediagirl: yep.

@hellobeeboston: considering there was a scene this season that was most certainly NOT in the book, it goes to reason that Martin already knows the ending and has shared it with the HBO writers. I've been reading these books since high school. He took 6 YEARS to write the last one. I mean ... COME ON!
honeydew / 7235 posts
@aegie: ohhhh?? Which scene? I only noticed the Jon snow/bran one - didn't remember that. But good call that he possibly shared the path of the storylines with the writers of the show! 6 years?! Oh man!!! Just think how long the last one will take? Or maybe he's been writing then both at the same time? I read somewhere that he was editing down 1000 pages for the next book.
He has a blog - he sometimes releases chapters - have you seen that?
clementine / 806 posts
@hellobeeboston: omg I just saw this. There was the scene where the white walker took the baby boy and placed him on the altar and then a white walker "king" took his finger and it changed him from human to a white walker. that's completely new. Not in any of his books and plays into how they are building their white walker army (as opposed to taking already dead bodies and changing them).
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aegie: Yes, the producers for GoT already know the ending! GRRM wanted them to know where they were going because they are definitely going to get ahead of him with how SLOW he writes!
As far as that white walker scene - it makes sense that wouldn't be in the book since each chapter is told from a character's point of view and none of them have ever witnessed how a white walker is made! But it definitely makes sense that they're turning those baby boys into white walkers!! They're going to have an ARMY!!!
I'm thinking at this point, I just want to watch the show and give up on the books. Book 4+ are sooooooo slow and don't advance the plot much!
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@aegie: It's interesting, too, because apparently someone at HBO effed up and put that white walker king down as "The Night's King" in their initial credits. People who had read the books started freaking out (if you have read the books, it's a very interesting revelation that the Night's King is still alive and creating a white walker army), and they took that down.
So, yes, GRRM has shared how the rest of the books will go. It also sounds like they're really going to start deviating from the books, especially now that they're catching up (and will soon pass) where GRRM is with the writing.
He is SO SLOW. I just hope he doesn't die before he's done writing the series Is that horrible of me to say??
clementine / 806 posts
@theotherstark: Yeah, it kind of pisses me off when I watch the show and I'm like, WOAH WOAH WOAH ... WTF that didn't happen or that's not how it goes! LOL
I didn't realize they were going to deviate from the books! They still have 1 more book to go. Or is it two? I can't remember anymore. But apparently he's writing a total of 8 books. omg, I may be a grandmother by the time he's done writing them. Only series I know that I will have read in a span of decades!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@aegie: 8?? I thought it was 6 or 7. It'll be 20 years before he's done.
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@aegie: @Leialou: Yeah, I think it was originally supposed to be 7, but GRRM said recently that it is looking more like 8 total (he's published 5 at this point, and is working on #6).
I'm one of those crazy people that probably shouldn't read the books first, because anytime the show deviates from the book, I'm like "what? That didn't happen in the book. WTF. Why did they do that? This is stupid." Haha. I did the same thing with Harry Potter.
Sooooo slow. I just want to read book 6!
clementine / 806 posts
@Leialou: originally his publisher wanted 7 books for the 7 kingdoms. But it's now going to be 8.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@theotherstark: I don't think that's horrible thing to say, especially after what happened with Robert Jordan! I feel the same way!
And I'm the same way - I get annoyed when the show deviates from the book! Especially that rape scene between Jaime and Cersei! Soooooo not what happened in the books!
clementine / 806 posts
@theotherstark: I'm the same way. When he cowrote some GoT mini story for another book and some companion piece to the world of ice & fire ... I was like HELLO! Finish your important book and stop messing with these fillers! LOL
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aegie: @theotherstark: Do you ladies ever read his blog?? He drives me bonkers before for MONTHS every year, all he ever talks about is football! I'm like "Come on man, FOCUS on your JOB!!!!"
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@Adira: OMG don't even get me started on that rape scene!!! WTF?! It was a huge blow to Jaime's character in the show, and it drove me nuts. ETA: and the fact that the writer's apparently "didn't realize" that they portrayed a rape scene?! Yeah...
@aegie: Right?! Yeah, he co-edited a book of short stories and I was like, dude. Finish your novel, THEN focus on your fun pet projects. Haha.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Adira: On one hand I want to read the books, but like what you said, what if he never finishes or takes forever, then I rather just stick to TV...
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@theotherstark: Yes! I really like Jaime from the books (well, once we started to get to know him) and I think that scene in the movie really was a disservice to his character. Though then again, he pushed a kid off a tower so...
@snowjewelz: At this point I'm thinking I'm more likely to get a satisfying ending out of the show than I am from GRRM! He's just not focused at all!! And his last two books were a bunch of blah blah blah that barely moved the plot forward AT ALL. Though GRRM wants the show to basically not end and have a movie for a finale. I hope they don't do that since then the movie might never get made!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@snowjewelz: I don't think the producers or HBO want to do that. They want to be able to end the show as a complete set and not do a movie! So I think that's what will happen! GRRM just wants a big movie budget for some of those finale scenes I think, haha!

There's an article out how angry his fans get at his writing pace!

Best quote: "One poster wrote, “George R. R. Martin, you suck… . Pull your fucking typewriter out of your ass and start fucking typing.” Another joked that Martin had written a book called “How to Cash in Big Time After You Write Half a Series.”

@Adira: @theotherstark: Can we also talk about Brianna fighting the Hound? Or the fact that Lady Stoneheart never appears?
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@mrbee: OMG! Haha, some commenters are just insane. I mean, it annoys me that it's taking him so long (and that he writes other things before finishing the series), but it doesn't affect my day-to-day life People need to take a chill pill!
@aegie: I totally thought the season would end with Lady Stoneheart. I wonder if they'll show her next season, or just cut her out completely like they cut out Coldhands?? I'm so sad Coldhands is not in the show
But, omg. Brienne fighting the Hound! I actually sort of loved it, and I LOVED how the Hound was finally like, yes, I am protecting her. They were my absolute favorite part of this season, and I'm so sad Arya and the Hound are now separated.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aegie: @theotherstark: I haven't finished this season, so haven't seen this part yet, but I will definitely be disappointed in Lady Stoneheart isn't in the show!! Also... the whole Brienne fighting the Hound... that didn't happen in the books at all! Doesn't the Hound get wounded in a fight in a bar and Arya leaves him to die?? And then Biter steals his helm and HE'S the one that fights Brienne?
@mrbee: Ugh, I definitely think it sucks people are just devoting their time to attacking him! That's unfair! I just think he's slow, haha, but I've also never had to write a sprawling 17 main characters story before! I also think I've gotten spoiled by Brandon Sanderson who keeps a progress bar on his website for all the books he's working on and keeps his readers well informed on exactly where he is and what he has left to do! I his style as an author - he seems to treat it like a real job and dedicates 8-9 hours a day writing!
clementine / 806 posts
@theotherstark: yeah .. i wanted to see lady stoneheart show up right before brienne sees arya. And she was supposed to fight someone who claimed to be the hound, not the actual hound! I was WTF HBO the whole time they were fighting! LOL He's supposed to "die" of his wounds from his fight with Polliver not Brienne. Ugh.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aegie: Although I can't say that I'm surprised that they change stuff like that. The show has to leave out all those minor characters (like hello, Stannis doesn't leech Gendry and then want to kill him - he does it to his nephew Eric)! I'm glad they are going to leave some things out (like I HOPE I don't have to watch all the stuff with the kingsmoot crap), but other stuff, it's definitely disappointing when it's not there or changed!
honeydew / 7235 posts
@aegie: just catching up on this!! I wondered about Lady Stoneheart too but figure there was so much jammed into the last episode that could be a good way to start the next season!
I get why they deviated from the book for the fight with the hound - better to fit in a sword fight then have him die of a wound.
You know what is terrible - I read all the books and TOTALLY forgot about stannis heading north! my husband was like - who is that??? - and I had no idea. Started coming back to me as I watched though. Ha, oops.

This is all so exciting to read! I'm only on season three and i've never read the books. I'm trying not to read spoilers, but I'm so obsessed with the show. I only watch it with my husband, and he works night shifts so we can only watch it a couple nights a week. I don't know if I can hold out!
