Games at Holiday Party

I love party games and activities! Tell me if this sounds fun to do at some point during the tree trimming party.

1) sing upbeat Christmas carols.

We have a keyboard and I would get a few jingle bells for people to use too. Of course the correct lyrics would be passed out for everyone.

2) pick best all time holiday movie

Break.com has a segment where three people dwindle down the top 16 of a cinematic theme for example top Spielberg action movies. We would set up something similar with the movie buffs in the group.

That's really all I have besides the tree trimming and hanging holly in the archway for kisses!

Are my games fun? Other fun games to play?

No, no and just no. I'm not a fan of organized "you must participate" games at adult parties. I'm not even a fan of them at children parties!

Definite no to no 1! Most people I know, can not sing!

I personally enjoy singing carols, but probably wouldn't be into the other game. What about a gingerbread house building competition?

I think it depends on your guests. I would love to do #1 with my uni friends if we were all tipsy. But with people I didn't know as well, I would feel awkward singing.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: haha no. There's can't sing, then there's shatter glass can't sing. I'm the latter.
Sorry, didn't mean to be insensitive. Agree, it depends on your guests.

@mrsrain: Gingerbread houses sounds like a lot of fun, but requires a free table and can get messy. My husband pulled the plug on party rentals, so I have to maximize the surfaces we already have.

@travelgirl1: some will be strangers to each other, but for the most part it's family and everyone will be drinking

I'm also team no games. The only activities I like at Christmas parties are drinking, eating and talking to friends. At our ugly Christmas sweater parties, we gave out prizes for ugliest, most festive and host's choice and had elf playing on a big screen.

I think you have to know your crowd. I'm not into things like that and prefer just conversation but lots of people are into those things of course.

I love games at parties (very socially awkward, so it's better than small talk), but I cringed at the singing. Though I think with the right crowd it could go over well.

At my last Christmas party, we did Dirty Santa/White Elephant, Christmas trivia (done in groups) (and I'm a Christmas fanatic so I came up with the questions), and Christmas song pictionary. They all went over really well.

@Torchwood: Christmas trivia could be a lot of fun! We have a bunch of know-it-alls. I wonder if smart phones are banned how well they'd fair.

@sapphire: Half of the invited guests would probably love the cheesiness of the singing and the other half would stare at the jollies or go to another room. I'm not sure if anyone would have actually seen 16 Christmas movies to actually critique. Hmm

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We banned smart phones (and looking in my various Christmas books!) and people did pretty well. I think individuals would have struggled, but in groups some knew some things, some knew others.

We usually do a White Elephant (also called Dirty Santa or Yankee Swaps) gift exchange, though I've always done them with crazy/silly gag gifts and a lot of our friends don't get that and bring nice things like gift cards and bottles of wine and then are upset when they get something silly.

I'm also not a big fan of organized activities at adult parties. But the one thing that has always been a ton of fun is at a friend's annual holiday party. Late in the evening after everyone is pretty drunk (adults-only party), everyone draws a number out of a hat and gets into groups based on the numbers, then everyone belts out The 12 Days of Christmas with each group singing the verse for their group's number. This only works because there are a lot of people and everyone is sloshed. It's hilarious.
