Gender Neutral Clothes

Hi! I've been reading the boards and am grateful for the advice, opinions, and camaraderie I've already seen here, but just signed up so I can begin commenting. I'm here from WB, where I've been posting in the Junebug thread. Currently 35w along!

Anyway, we're not finding out our baby's sex, and I'm wondering if anyone has found a great source for gender neutral clothing that does includes more than the color white or yellow with yellow ducks?

Would love your help! We've received the above as gifts, and I've yet to purchase any baby clothes myself.

I've found some gender neutral clothes at Babies R Us, usually Carter's brand. It's easier to find it for younger babies. I like to buy my LO gender neutral pj's because I don't want to have to buy all new stuff if we have a boy next, but in her size (anywhere over 12 months) they are all either boy or girl. Usually I just buy her some boy stuff anyway.

I bought a ton of ours at Winners (which I think is like TJ Maxx in the US), and Old Navy had a lot of gender neutral offerings (no yellow or ducks for us!)

Ross had some very adorable onesies for a while (Hey Diddle Diddle nursery rhyme.) Baby Gap had some gorgeous unisex stuff recently. Other than Baby Gap, I haven't found anything unisex for anything over 9 months. I'm not big on duckies either, but I do like frogs.

We also tried to stay as gender neutral as possible, since we didn't find out the sex of the baby either and we wanted to be able to reuse them for our second child if it was the opposite gender. We bought most of our stuff from Carter's, Old Navy, and Baby Gap.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! We truly don't have that much clothing yet, and what we do have is mostly Carter's. Will have to check out the actual Carter's store, Old Navy, and Baby Gap. Will probably buy some more pieces now, then once we know the gender, buy some more specific ones. Thanks again!

Mine came from Carter's. Remember you don't need a TON. Just enough for the 1st month or so, then you can buy girl/boy clothes. We didn't find out and it was quite easy for us.

I agree with the PPs that Target, Carter's, Baby Gap etc. have good deals if you get lucky. I found that some boy clothing wasn't really "boyish" and could be used either way. I was dying to shop before we knew what we were having and had so much trouble finding things that weren't ducks! I didn't have any luck at Babies R Us, though, to be honest.

Congratulations on being Team Green! We were too and loved it.

I was glad we didn't stock up too much on clothes because we ended up having a girl and a lot of GN clothes are a bit more boyish (IMO). When babies come out all wrinkly, I liked to have her in pink so everyone knew she was a girl.

I agree to try to just buy enough to get you through the first few weeks. After that you will have time to shop and get gifts. Our LO spent a lot of time at first in a few blue gowns, yellow ducky sleepers, and white onesies.

We were team green with both of ours. I found that gerber had a good selection of gender neutral (mainly green as the base) onsies and sleepers. Like other comments have said, Carter and Target are good too. My experience is that it definitely gets harder to go gender neutral once you get past the 0-3 size.

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I'm not aiming to buy a ton, but we literally only have about 8 onesies and a couple striped footed 1-piece pjs. Just need enough neutral so that I don't have to run to the store with a 2-week-old. Don't even have pants or shorts or anything to go over the onesies. Am due next month and live in CA, so I'm concerned that the baby will be too hot if we add too many layers, but I do want to be sure we have enough so I'm not doing multiple washes every day! I generally have no idea what I'm doing, since this is our first -- do you normally put shorts/pants over a onesie?

Today I ventured out to Marshall's and Ross and was pretty disappointed in the lack of selection. Looks like any chance of neutral would be from the boys' section, and most items still looked too "boy" for me. I'm not sure how others feel, but I'm also not a fan of anything with writing on it, such as "Mommy Loves Me," or "Team Grandpa" or anything like that. And things like "Daddy's Little Monster" just screamed "boy" to me.

Will have to find more time to hit up the Carter's outlet or Target.

I also love some of the gender neutral clothes from Baby Gap. Or a lot of the "boys" clothes there seem like they would be gender neutral.

@shopaholic: I agree!! I love the GAP and their items are very neutral. I feel like in general boys clothes are more easily worn by girls. I have a baby boy and I can see my future daughter wearing at least half of his wardrobe!

Almost anything can be made more feminine by adding a baby hat or bow.

I also think baby jeans are VERY versatile - you could easily buy tons of pants as they are very neutral and then accessorize with gender specific tops.

These knit-waisted jeans are my favorite for babys as the denim is really soft and doesn't dig into baby's skin:

Thanks for adding to the recs here. I hope they will help others waiting for a delivery surprise. I ended up having a boy who is 3 months old now. Worked out well since most of the stuff we got was from the boys' side anyway. Now I can buy more boy stuff...if only his grandparents would stop spoiling him.

@Coco Bee: That's totally my strategy - if we have a girl, I'll just slap a bow on her and voila - all the gender neutral clothing is suddenly girly!

@Mrs. Tricycle: as soon as they said to me "It's a girl" my first thought was "I need to get this girl some bows ASAP!". Whenever I feel she looks a little boyish I just add some head bling and she's back on track.
