Ew! I hate spiders and all bugs in general. We just kill bugs with soap water but not in big amounts. Just the spider here and there. I'd be kind of worried about the chemicals too. Curious to hear from other HBers.

We have a friend who used to own a diy bug store. We always have him take care of it. He uses the least harmful stuff for us since we have a dog and baby. Maybe you could talk to someone at a store like that, I'm sure they could give you some answers.

Ugh we've been noticing spiders a lot in our basement too (and the nursery is in the basement!), especially with the warmer weather, all of the spiders want to be in the nice cool basement!

Right now we're just trying to clean everything up that we can...buying big storage containers to put things in vs. storing things in cardboard boxes (apparently spiders love cardboard!)...so far we haven't seen any place where they are coming in, but who knows. Ick! I hate them.

We recently had exterminators come out to the new house because we have a real carpenter ant problem. Toxicity or not having ants eat away at our woodwork is NOT ideal. When he was here he noticed all the webs we had in the basement that we had thought were just cobwebs. Turns out they are spiderwebs. And there are TONS. So he went around the house checking and turns out there are spider webs all over the house in pretty much all the closets etc. And this is after 60% of the house has been cleaned by us!
So since it was included in our maintenance package we had him spray for spiders as well. I was NOT happy about it and we asked him to stay out fo the nursery and had my husband close the door and put a towel in front of it. He said to give it two weeks and he will come back. There will be time I think for another spider treatment before we move in. To allot enough time after the second spraying for the chemicals to work and for us to wipe everything down. Trust me I will wipe EVERYTHING down. I don't want our baby to start crawling, putting her hands on the walls and then putting it in her mouth.

According to the exterminator with spiders they are much harder to get rid of because they do not ingest the poison. And because their legs have "spikes" it never touches their body. And unlike other insects such as ants they don't clean themselves therefore even if the chemical is on their body they do not ingest it. So the best way to get rid of them is for other insects to ingest the poison then they eat the insect and therefore ingest the poison. And by getting rid of the webs it forces them to leave their nest to look for food.
I wasn't happy about the use of chemicals especially in a spray form but the alternative of a spider biting her is not ideal either.
