Just curious, how much is too much for you to spend on a gift for your child? And would you ever buy your child a designer item? I don't want to get too specific due to certain snark sites, but I really really want to get my baby a tiny designer item for Christmas. Obviously it wont be used for a while, but I kind of want it as a heirloom type thing for her. I know it sounds crazy. But just interested in how much others think is too much to spend on something like this?

It's your money, I don't think anyone else needs to be concerned by how much you spend on your LO, no matter what type of item it is.

Honestly it's your money, if you have it to spend and it makes you happy to buy it for her, then I don't see the problem.
Forget the snark sites, no matter what you do you'll always find people that disagree. I got some comments about my LO wearing Freshly Picked moccs, but they didn't know we won them in a giveaway (TWICE!). People will always find something to talk about.

@Arden: I need some FP moccs. I wish I understood how babies shoe sizes work. Every store I go in, I try on the tiniest shoes on Zumas feet and they fit so weird and fall right off. So frustrating!

I don't have a cutoff, but generally in life I prefer to spend my money on experiences rather than on stuff. So I would be more likely to skip a designer item and put the money towards a family outing or vacation.

@Arden: Good to know, and you must be lucky. I never win anything. I think if I remember correctly they are like 20 minutes away from me and sometimes have a warehouse sale or something. I need to check them out for sure.

If it makes a difference to people, I am planning on picking up 2 extra shifts between now and Christmas to pay for it. So it's not going to be paid for with bill money or anything. I don't know why I feel the need to justify myself. Maybe I am just rehearsing the speech for my DH and dad...

@Pumuckl: It feels right to gift her a brand new car or something and she is only a month old haha. I am honestly too impulsive and would give her the world if I could. So that is why I wanted to ask all of you, but all of you are being too nice and telling me to just do it lol. Oh well, no regrets!

I think as long as it's not designer (aka trendy and will be outdated soon) but a classic heirloom that can be passed down (pearls, diamonds, etc) then that's totally fine. Not saying all heirlooms have to be jewelery but that's the most classic example I could think of. I splurged on my daughters first Christmas ornament because I know how much I still love the one my parents got for me (and I still have it hung on the trees each year).

I was thinking Wedgewood china or fancy sterling baby utensils that require polishing. Not really practical for a baby, but still are gifted.

Eta: sorry I read it as a designer purse made for a baby. Are you talking about an adult purse that you would gift now and she would use when she gets older?

@anonysquire: ok - totally honest here. I think the idea is a sweet idea, but realistically, it will be likely outdated when she's old enough to appreciate it. at least, that's what I would think if I were Z...but, I'm not into fashion or accessories whatsoever, so there's that.

To answer your question, it's your money so you can do what you want with it! I wouldn't want to spend $$$ on something only to keep it in my closet unused for 10+ years.
I do plan on giving my daughter MY bags when she's older and responsible to take good care of them though. -
@anonysquire: honestly a designer purse for not even one year old doesn't make sense to me. I think it is a great 13 or 16th bday gift so she can pick out the style that she likes.

I love the idea of an heirloom gift and would definitely spend a good amount to get something I love and that I think is classic, like jewelry, china, crystal or something like that. Personally a purse wouldn't fit that category for me. I like @Smurfette:'s idea better about letting her pick one out for a special birthday gift when she's older.
ETA I do think a classic designer bag could be an heirloom -i have a Gucci bag of my grandmother's that I cherish - but I think passing down makes more sense than letting a new bag sit in a dust bag for 14 years, and that's assuming she'll even be in to things like designer bags!

@JerricaBenton: Oh trust me, if she is my daughter she will be into designer bags. I don't have a sense of style whatsoever but I do love my bags! And I just kind of like the idea of getting her her own bag and making it her special first bag kind of thing. And hopefully some more of my 10 future kids are girls and I can do the same thing for them.

@anonysquire: are you talking about like a Chanel quilted bag or something? I have to be completely honest, I'd put all the money in an envelope or something and let her go wild on a purse when she gets older. My mom and I have completely opposite tastes and guarantee if she bought a purse for me and stored it to give it to me later I probably would not have ended up liking it and she would have felt awful. Bags are a very personal taste and it would be hard to choose a bag for a baby that they would like as a teenager.

@anonysquire: I hear ya. I love a good bag, but this is honestly something I think about often for my daughter. Im a girly girl - into clothes and makeup and shoes, but you just never know what kind of little lady you're going to get, you know? I know I'll have to work not to project my interests on lo and I don't want her to think im disappointed if she's not the same kind of girl as I am.
But that's beside the point I guess. If you want to do it, do it! It sounds like your mind is made up anyway

@hotchildinthecity: I agree with this. My mom's tastes have always been very different than mine, just because of the difference in generations. I would have snubbed a purse my mom had picked out for me 10 years before she was going to give it to me.

@anonysquire: we took my DD with us when I got a bag and she toted the bag I think you're taking about around. It was stinking adorable, but there was no way we were going to spend that much on it for her. She was 2 at the time!
At 3, she does love carrying my Eva clutch around for me when we're out together. -

Just buy a bag for yourself and then you can hand it down to her one day. -
@hotchildinthecity: I know a lot of people don't like them. My sister doesn't and we are freaking related. I plan on working extra shifts to make sure that this bag is paid for entirely with money that would not be used for anything else. And we're taking the sweet baby to Disneyland in September and usually take vacations a couple times a year (not trying to brag, we just like to travel and change the pace) so she will not be lacking in that department

I don't know anything about bags and memories and such. I've had designer bags since I was old enough to afford them but nothing worthy of saving and passing down. But I am not much of a sentimental person.
