My coworker just sent out a link for his daughter's girl scout cookie order. I was a sucker and bought six boxes but was surprised that shipping was so expensive. I told myself its for a good cause and proceeded with the order.
Why girl scouts why!!! does anyone else have a weak spot for girl scout cookies?

I loooove Girl Scout Cookies. Last year, I couldn't eat any because of the MSPI diet, but this year I'm all over it!

Why do you have to pay shipping?! Doesn't it just go to their troop then distributed?

@regberadaisy: girl scouts are now shipping their cookies. My coworker usually doesnt distributes because its annoying tracking down people for money and cookies so this year his troop participated in the online program

Samoas. I live for Samoas. My aunt just gave me two boxes at Christmas that she bought from a coworker. She knows how to make a pregnant woman very happy.

Wow, that shipping is expensive. I hope it is to discourage online sales and promote girl-selling. I sold a lot of cookies in my day and I wouldn't want to compete with online orders.

I don't know any parents of Girl Scouts anymore. It doesn't seem to be as popular. Can I still order online? I NEED my thin mints nom nom nom

@Corduroy: I think, and I'm not totally positive about this but I think when ordering online, your order goes to a specific scout. It does seem to take the "work" out of it for the kid, though. I hope they still sell them in front of Walmart, the grocery stores, etc so I can get them w/o shipping costs!

My daughter is in Daisies and will be selling cookies this year. This is her first year so I wasn't aware that you could buy them online. Her troop at first said they weren't going to sell cookies (which is why I went with them - instead of another troop - I hate selling stuff). I'm hoping my husband can sell a lot at work. Although I'm sure I'll buy my fair share of thin mints - yummy.

@regberadaisy: My coworkers DD is a GS but he hates transporting the cookies because people at my job go crazy for them and one coworker had over 20 cases to bring to work and it was not fun. So... one is pushing for the online order so he doesnt have to deal and the other one only does on a if you ask basis.
I'm thinking of enrolling DD so I can satisfy my cookie needs and plus I love selling stuff LOL

Thin mints are my favorite! Mmmmm. I'd never had a Girl Scout cookie until last year when my husband brought home. I quickly became a fan

The problem is that the vast majority of that money is not going to a good cause. It's part of why shipping is so high, so that less of the money actually goes to the girls. The Bloggess had a lot to say about it recently, and I was shocked at how crappy the Girl Scouts are being.

@Torchwood: Wow, interesting read! Do you know how much goes to the Girl Scout if you buy in person? I also wonder if this is typical of online ordering (I.e 60 cents only to the troop). The pension part response was kind of suspicious.

We boycott Girl Scouts, so there's that, but I will say that if you're trying to support GS, more of your money will be going to the local troop with a cash donation than by buying cookies. Only around $0.50 per box goes to your local troop, and from my experience with Scouts, that's actually highballing it. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2010/02/06/girl-scout-cookies-by-the-numbers-just-where-do-all-those-dolla/
(You might wonder why someone who doesn't support GS would advise you how to increase your support for the organization. It's because a) fundraising needs to be more transparent, so I want to point out the reality of cookie sale profits when I can; and b) even if I personally don't agree with it, I think it's great for people to support the local organizations they believe in.)
