Totally last minute and random... my family is going to take a 2 hour glass blowing class tomorrow. I am 30 weeks along and didn't even think to ask about whether or not this is safe for me to do.
What are your thoughts? Should I sit this one out? Have you heard anything about glass blowing during pregnancy? I don't want to risk anything but was kind of excited!

My sil took a glassblowing glass she said the ovens were CRAZY hot.. She had to wear really thick leather gloves.
I know they recommend pregnant women not going into saunas and hot tubs.. the oven's a LOT hotter.
Can you call your OB and ask?

@chopsuey: I saw that link as well and am feeling a little concerned... I don't know about calling the OB at this point. It's after hours and on the weekend. I am partially feeling like an idiot for not thinking about it sooner.

@creativemomma15: I did a glass blowing session several years ago before having LO and I think you can still go and enjoy yourself. You can do the part where you pick out the colored glass and pick what kind of object you want to make and observe the lesson and help with the cooling off/sculpting part. It's not like the whole studio is hot just when they open up the oven and you are standing in front of it...and you can sit that part out.

I would probably still go, but I would wear protective gloves and let someone else take the glass in/out of the oven (not for the heat issue, but just because it might be hard to get close to the oven and move fragile glass with a big bebe-belly!). You could always ask the instructor too; but it's only 2 hours, so I personally wouldn't call my OB after-hours to ask.
The no hot tub rule is for early on in pregnancy and about raising your core temp by immersing yourself in things "hot"; not about staying away from things that could be hotter than a hot tub. It's not like you stand around right in front of a hot oven all class

@chopsuey: @sandy: I looked further in that link and she says that instructors don't recommend it because of the heat and movements, not because of the chemicals. I am not sure what chemicals would be involved.
I am just not sure what to do and DH is away right now so I can't really consult his opinion. I don't want to overreact, but I would also like to know if it's something I should avoid.

@creativemomma15: I would call the glass blowing studio bc they would probably know best and I'm sure their insurance carrier has advised them if there should be restrictions against pregnant women participating in their classes. Honestly, I would be ok going and participating in the non-oven portion of the class...the oven isn't a huge part of the class bc it's not like you are making huge glass pieces in an intro class

Just an update... I have a friend with a midwife friend and she asked her and said everything should be fine. So, I went for it. There were no chemical smells or anything. You just added colored glass and such. I only really stood next to the heat thing for a couple minutes and that was only for like a minute at a time with a heat shield in between. It was fun, but harder than I thought. The movements weren't too heavy or crazy, but you just have to keep rolling the metal pipe and multitask! It didn't take long to make my project and the rest of the time I sat towards the back where it was nice and cool! Thanks for your input ladies!
ETA: The instructors were fine with me being pregnant too
