When my niece was that age she was into The a diary of a Wimpy kid. Does either of them like to read?
Or a craft kit to make your own bracelets, purse, first sewing / knitting kit, etc. -

Stickers. Cute notebooks/stationary and school supplies. Hair accessories. Chapstick/lip glosses. Jewelry.

Nail stuff. both of my nieces (4th and 6th grade) are all about fun nails. And one is girly and the other one isn't especially.
They're also getting lip gloss and leather bracelets.

I teach 6th grade and for some reason they are way into that patterned duct tape art. You can find little kits at Walmart for fairly cheap. I don't get it, but they love it.

I was just at a craft fair and one booth had these really neat glitter "tattoos." I was going to suggest that, but their website is useless. I figured I'd still mention it in case they get it fixed later and someone pulls up this thread in a search. I got the kit for me and my 16yo sister, because being a grown up is boring.

My niece just turned 10 and she loves crafts... I bought her an origami kit (Target or Amazon). She also likes clothes from Justice (it's a very cheesy and pretty awful clothing store that apparently is all the rage ... Around here at least) She also loves Pokemon but that just might be because of her little brother!
