I'm a firm believer in let the kids choose the name of the grandparents. My in-laws don't understand this. "Well, what do you call us when you're referring to us?" "I don't really call you anything." "Well what do you call -your- parents?" I call my parents grandmomma and granddaddy. Because I call my mom momma and I call my dad daddy. (Yes, I'm 24 and call my dad daddy still.) I don't have names for the ILs.

As it is, nether kid calls either set of grandparents anything although I suspect that my MIL is pushing really hard for grammy and pop-pop. No offense to grandparents who are called that but I think it's kinda dumb. I'd be more inclined to have them called grandma and grandpa.

My parents already had grand kids so they go by Nana and Pop. My ILs chose to be called Grandmom and Grandpop. My biological father chose to be called Granddad.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Well my SIL is a full-time nanny to twins. And the twins named FIL pop pop since neither sets of their grandparents live close and they've known my ILs since infancy (They're 3 or 4 now). FIL made DS a toy chest which is sitting in our living room acting as a coffee table? And he signed the inside of it 2013 Pop Pop. We never ever call him that. Why the heck would he sign it that?? But I'm against calling him that because I think it sounds really really silly.

I honestly don't like referring to my parents or ILs as anything grandparent-y. It just sounds so awkward to my ear. They are all too young to be grandparents! We just call them (both sides) grandma and grandpa right now but I know MIL hates that and wants her "own" name to differentiate from my mom.

MIL hardly acts like a grandparent to C though so it makes me not want to allow her to have her own special name. It sounds like sour grapes, I know, but I honestly don't think she's done anything to deserve a special name.

So that said, we don't really have everything figured out on this front and DS is 10 months old! I guess we'd better figure it out soon.

We'll let DS call them what he chooses, although they all refer to themselves by different names already.

DS is the first grandkid on my side so there are no set names.

When we were kids we were with our Grandma (mom's mom) a lot and then we went to see our other Grandma (dad's mom) and my sister who was only a couple years old was so confused, so we started calling her Nana to differentiate, even though none of the other grandkids did.

My mom was all excited to choose, and is Nana. Really hope LO cooperates with it, since she'll be disappointed if not. My dad wants to be Granddaddy, since like NaturallyCathy, he's still Daddy to me so it feels natural. My stepmom still hasn't decided, so unless she does she'll just be whatever LO calls her. FIL wants to be Papa Ray, and his wife is just Shay Shay (her name is Shay. She doesn't care for kids and has no interest in being anything that sounds "old."), MIL and step-FIL I don't remember, but they do have something, since there's already a grandchild on DH's side. Mine will be the first (only child except for 14yo and 12yo half-siblings by my dad) for my side, so we'll get to decide that.

Oh, and my mom previously declared that my stepdad will be Pop or PopPop, but they've been separated for years now and I barely talk to him, so I really don't know how much he'll be in LO's life, or even if he actually likes that as a name.

We're just letting our parents self-designate. My inlaws want to be grandma/grandpa. My mom has waffled but I think she landed on grandma, and I think my dad said he wanted to be poppa? or poppy? I can't remember lol. I figure they have a while to decide before she is really talking anyways.

My parents are Nanny and. Granddaddy, my older nephew chose their names.
My ILs are Nana and Papa and they chose, which I don't have a problem with at all.

Both sets of grandparents have grand kids that set the name standard. Both grandpas go by Tata but I know which she's asking for since Nana is my MIL and my mom is grandma. At 16 months she's doesn't really talk a lot but will sometimes ask for Tata

My parents are Grandma and Grandpa. My MIL is Omi, which is a derivative of Oma, which is the German word for Grandma. My MIL's mother is German and still alive, so she retains the title of Oma. My MIL said she might switch from Omi to Oma when her mother dies, which is a little morbid but whatever. I prefer to pick my battles.

My parents are Nana and Poppy. MIL wanted to be grandma and then changed her mind after LO was here because that is what her mother is called (pretty sure everyone has a grandma but ok) and is Gran. I hate it!! And refuse to use it

My in laws already had grand kids, so they are called Moomaw and Po. My parents were really excited to pick names. My mom wants to be Nana, and my Dad wants to be Oh Wise One but has settled for Grandpa.

When I was pregnant, MIL went crazy trying to find something unique to be called other than grandma. (I think because she was trying to one up my mom being called 'grandma' in korean). Anyway, she said she wanted to be called "Oma" grandma in German...I said H-NO, because "Umma" is mom in korean and that was too confusing. She tried Nana for a bit when DS was an infant, but that didn't stick.

Anyway, DS knows my parents by the korean versions of grandma/pa and knows my ILs as grandma/grandpa - so no confusion He doesn't call any one by anything yet, so we'll see if it changes with his pronunciation.

My mom decided to be Nana and she's his only grandmother. He has three Papaws though, my dad, DH's dad, and my stepdad. I wish my sister (who had the first grandchild) would have differentiated between dad and stepdad.

DH's dad just decided to call himself Papaw to his first grandchild so that's what it is.

@Smurfette: I know it's probably counter intuitive. But when pressed I just call them grandmother or grandfather last name. My parents always referred to their parents as grandmother or grandfather. DH's had different names. His dad's dad is grandpa and his dad's mom is actually her first name. Its always been that way because that's what DH decided to call her when he was two or three. But DH's family isn't big on titles, like aunt or great uncle or grandparent. My family is big on titles.

We just recognize that we may call them something but the kids may come up with their own name like @Mrs. Jump Rope. They don't have names down yet anyways. DS only has mama, dada, and DD's name down pat but he only just started really talking clearer within the past month or two. He's a late talker. I think that's the biggest thing. We'd rather he have something he can say that means something to him than trying to force something he can't pronounce it. :

My mom and step-dad are Gigi and Fritz. They were in their early late 40s when their first grandkid was born, so they didn't want to be Granma or Nana or anything like that. My stepdad chose Fritz cuz it's a family name. And my mom chose Gigi cuz her name is Ginny. She wanted Delilah, but my ex-step-brother-in-law had a sister named Delilah. My ILs are Pop and Nunu. I think that's just tradition in my husband's family. And then D was my dad's first grandkid, and he chose to be Grampa, which is what we called our grandfathers growing up.
