I've heard that for better pollination you need 2 types of bushes, but I think having 1 will still work- you may not get as many berries.

I have 2 plants in wine barrels that are 5 years old. One does super well and the other one does ok. I also have 3 that we planted 2 years ago in the ground, but it looks like this might be the first year we get berries. I think we have 4 varieties in total.

Following! We have 3 small plants, I think they may be 2 different varieties. The first two are 3-4 yrs old and hardly produce any berries. The new one is just 2 years old, but is about the same size as the first two. I'd love to get some tips as well.

Oh, I've noticed that mine seem to like coffee grinds.

@littlehunny: I'm curious about your wine barrel. We have a full whiskey barrel that I'd like to find a use for. Are you using a half barrel? Did you do anything to it or just fill it up with dirt and plant?

I'm just beginning my venture into gardening - this is our first spring in our new home!

I'd love blueberries. Where do you buy the plans - local nursery? Lowes?

@sorrycharlie: I found that the HD plants were not as high quality as the ones I bought from a local nursery.

@Mamaof2: I surrounded my blueberry bushes with some chicken wire to help with keeping the critters away.

@regberadaisy: oh cool - just checking that website out now! Totally affordable too, even if I somehow botched them. I'm not too far from you. Is there a way to search results by zone? Lol. I'm such a novice!!

@regberadaisy: mine haven't spread that much. I'll see if I can get a picture up for you this afternoon I have raspberry bushes too and they spread like crazy! (The reason we have them is that our neighbour planned them and they popped up on our side of the yard haha)

@MamaG: it's a half wine barrel that we just filled with dirt and planted the bushes. I'm not sure if the garden store we got them from did something to them first, but they said they were ok to plant food in.

@Mamaof2: netting over the top could work or shiny objects have been hit and miss from what I've read. My problem last year was my 2 year old twins eating all the berries haha

@Mamaof2: We have a massive sugarplum hedge (Amelanchier) that keeps all the birds happy, so thankfully we don't have a bird problem. But it's mainly because our blueberry bushes are still so small.
