My son is in Kindergarten, and has made a bunch of good friends. He has playdates with some of them sometimes, and one of us will go and get a chance to meet his friend's parents.
My parents knew the parents of my friends who lived on my street, and the ones I met in elementary school. By high school though, they had pretty much stopped keeping track of what I was up to! They knew most of my friends though, just because I made most of my HS friends when I was really young.

Yes, but I grew up in a really small town (< 3,000 people) and everybody knew everybody.

Nope. I was a pretty secretive kid so my parents only really knew a handful of my friends over the years, let alone their parents.
I would like to find a nice balance with my kid. No crazy know everyone mom, but not a don't care about who you hang out with kind of mom either.

Yes they did, and the town I grew up in had over 100,000 people. That's just their way. My parents know EVERYONE in town.

Yes. But we lived in the country so the only way to know other people before kindergarten was through their parents. We had no neighbors for miles.
Then in elementary and middle school, my mom worked at my school so she at least was familiar with people's parents even if she didn't know them personally.

Yep. And I will do the same with my kids. My husband had way too much freedom (his mom was off getting drunk and that kind of fun stuff) and he did whatever he wanted. No need for a balance between the two. It's good to know who your kids are going to be with.

They did! One of the reasons I think my parents let me come and go as I pleased (within reason) was because they knew my friends, and their parents. And our parents talked , so there wasn't any fooling any of them.

Mostly until I was 13 and moved away from home. (Boarding school, people... Not exactly out on the streets... Although for all my parents knew I could have been).

@mrbee: In elementary school my parents knew all of the other parents, I grew up in a small town where everyone knew everyone.
By highschool they didn't, I went to HS in a different town.

I think they knew most of them eventually. At least the ones that I was very good friends with (and still am) they all knew their parents. But, I never tried to NOT let them meet their parents. I hope that I am the same with DD. I don't need to be BFFs with her friends parents, but I would like to at least know their names and a little bit about them

Yes but I grew up in a military community so my dad worked with a lot of their parents.
