DH's BFF's baby was born on Sat and her name is the same as our LO's nickname (that we use all the time)..just with one extra letter!
I know it shouldn't matter but I'm a little upset! We see them all the time.

I would be bummed mostly because of the inconvenience. I feel like it will be confusing if these are people you see all the time. But just try to think of it as a compliment that they love your daughter's name so much.

yea..i think it's a little annoying too...but i guess what are they supposed to do if they loved that name already? my good friend's baby is named ethan and i really like the name eden for a girl. but it sounds too similar so i probably wouldn't use it. not for a first name at least.

I disagree, you don't own a name and friends and family are free to pick the name they love best, even if it's similar to yours. If anything I'd take it as flattering that they picked a name so similar to yours!

Oh, I'd be annoyed. Nothing you can do about it and I'm not saying they aren't "allowed" to do it, but it would annoy me if I saw them a lot. Unless it was a family name or something like that.

I can understand why you are bummed but they were within their right.

This hasn't happened to me but... my husbands brother and his GF knew what we plan on naming our future son(since DD turned out to be a girl) took the name and gave it to their cat! This was almost a year ago, but last weekend everyone was asking what we would name our next kid and we said well not (this name) since you named your cat that. He said yeah, we renamed our cat that since you guys were talking about it. urgg.. not a big deal but things like that really irk me!

My close friend and I delivered 3 weeks apart. Our girls have rhyming names--only the first letter is different--and we all love it! Each name has meaning to all of us and no one copied--we found out about our name choices at the same time.
That name could have special meaning to them. Could've been something they had already agreed on before your LO was born?

I would be annoyed. Even though you don't own a name, I would never name my LO anything close to a friends!

@mrsaudi: Yeah, just a little annoyed. I'm sure I'll be over it soon!
@mrsjazz: No, they sent us a "I hope you aren't upset" email this morning that said they just liked the name a lot!

@autumnlove: Annoying, I would be annoyed too. Instead of sending you an after-the-fact email it would have been nice if they spoke to you about it in person so it wasn't such a shock. I know nobody owns a name but I would expect that from a close friend that I see often.

We named our daughter something very similar to a cousin that she has. Our nieces name is Daisy and basically our daughters name is one letter different. They are almost 10 years apart though so it hasn't been a big deal at family functions.

I would be annoyed because although you don't own a name, there are a billion other names to choose from.

@Bao: @REESE: Ugh, they told us in the email to feel free to use something really similar to their first daughter's name. LOL.

I guess I wouldn't be annoyed since I used it first! If anything people thing they copied you.
Edit: On my mom's side of the family we have a Shea, Shayla, and Shyla. The girls love having similar names & no one was annoyed at the closeness.

Hm, I feel like this is a tough subject, because one one hand I can totally understand why you'd feel a bit annoyed. But on the other, it's possible they liked that name before you used it, and I don't think it would be fair to expect them to give it up just because your child was born first. And even if they did just copy you, they obviously love the name a lot, so that should be a compliment! Hopefully it doesn't cause too many problems! I'm sure the annoyance will probably go away once you get used to the idea

@lovelife: I think this would annoy me more! Taking a name for an animal is just rude!
@autumnlove: I would definitely be a little upset however. We are in the process of choosing names now and it's really hard to find one that both of us love. Luckily I think we found both a boy's and girl's name but we are not telling anybody until June!

Yup, my husband's cousin named their daughter the exact same name as our daughter's. It bugged me at first but I'm over it now. It really bothered me recently though when we went to a family birthday event. They were handing out party favors for the gifts and they called out our daughter's name and my husband and his cousin both stood up to get the gift. My husband smiled but I know it bothered him. Our daughters have the same first AND last name!

@banana: I was thinking about you today when I posted it!
Ugh, same first and last is hard.
I think I am over it!

Yes. It was a pretty crazy situation. DH's ex girlfriend pretty much copied our name six months after LO was born.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Dang, that is weird! Do you live in the same city and have the same friends?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: ew. I could totally see hubs' crazy ex doing this some day if she ever found someone willing to make babies with her.

My daughter is Libby-Jane, which are both family names. In my family there is Jane (my grandma who everyone is named after), Barbara Jane (goes by Janey), Sammi Jane (goes by just sammi) and my daughter who goes by Libby-Jane. My husband's grandma was Libby and they have a Kristen Libby and a Clara Libby. His family gave us some slack about using the name after the others already had, but we figured if it was so important to them they would have used it as a first name. We also stand by the fact that her name is hyphenated so technically we came up with a totally new concept for either family.

Not on my side, but on DH's side, there's a Tyler, Kyler, Ty and Skyler. Wow!!!

We did this unintentionally to our bestfriends. Their oldest daughters name is Madeline, she goes by Addie and we thought that was her real name. We named our daughter Madailein.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: oohh that's bad!
I was snooping on my ex-husbands facebook page while pg with DD, for different reasons when I noticed he and his at the time gf were expecting. They picked a name on our list, and I crossed it off ours as soon as I found out! My DS does not need two sisters with the same name, lol!
