I have a few times, even though my doctor said there is a risk of infection if done too much, but I was curious, I kept it to a minimum though. Most of the time I couldn't even reach it. The one time (out of the few) I did try, it felt like I could push a finger through. I'm not a dr so I have no idea

I feel like I wouldn't really know even if I tried, so it wouldn't do much to try. I'm just not properly trained.

@winniebee: Interesting considering that a friend of ours was a medical student when she was pregnant. In her birth story blog entry, she mentions checking for dilation. According to her, she checked it herself.

@katiew92081: I personally had no interest in checking myself so I don't think she was trying to dissuade me!

I was wondering how you'd reach down there, LOL.

DH checked mine at 41+3. I had been having contractions all day and wanted to know if I had "progressed" at all. No progression but I did lose my mucus plug on his HAND!!! bwahahaha!

I wouldn't know how. Even my doc seems to have trouble reaching in there far enough...small hands? Or long vagina? I have no idea.

It is definitely possible to do but not recommended if your water has broken because of the risk of infection!!

I was taught and told how to check myself for my second pregnancy since I had a lot of preterm labor with my first. It was pretty interesting going into the Drs office and telling him I was at a 2. Then the look on his face when he checked and I was correct: priceless!!! It was a good way to keep track of things. Hard contractions with no change after two hours is prolly dehydration for me.
