We're going to change DS' middle name.
I read that I just need to circle and make the changes I want on an original copy of his birth certificate, include a letter stating what we want done, and mail it to vital records with a $10 check.

I had an acquaintance who changed her LO's first name. She said the name just didn't end up fitting the baby. Is that what happened in your situation? I hope your family and friends are supporting your decision.

@Katrocap: We had 2 names picked out and decided we liked the one we didn't choose better. Such a pain! Both sides of our families are really good about not overstepping boundaries and are always super supportive.
I never sent out a birth announcement so most people don't even know his middle name.

I hadn't even thought of being able to do this. Good to keep in mind in case we're ever in that situation!

@chopsuey119: I have a family name as a middle name, I share the name with my mother, my uncle, my cousin and my grandfather. It was my great-grandmothers maiden name. I really wanted to use it as a second middle name for DS but we thought it might be too much and didn't. I regret it and am thinking of adding it. Especially since my grandfather passed away a month ago.

Following!
DS has two middle names and we want to drop the second one. I don't know what the process is or if I can do it here.

@Sweet T: I want to do two middle names and DH is dead set against it. I wonder if I could add it later and he'd never notice. ^_-

@chopsuey119: we're shortening her first name but she will be a year before we actually do it. She goes by the shortened version (pretty much always since birth!)

@googly-eyes: I don't understand why DH hates it so much. If we have a boy we HAVE to use Ray as the middle name (family reasons with his dad), even though we both dislike it. I feel like a second middle name would help, particularly since our last name is one syllable too and it makes picking names harder. But nope, he won't even consider it. I love the way having 2 middle names flows. And I have 2, since I didn't drop my maiden name when I took his, and it hasn't caused me any difficulty. If anything it helps because I now have SUCH a common last name.

@chopsuey119: Just wondering is it only $10 because he is under one and/or because it's his middle name? I had a co-worker who hated her son's name (especially after she got divorced...she never liked it to begin with, but let her husband at the time pick it out) and she was considering having it legally change but she said it was so expensive? It was his first name and he was like 6 or so at the time. I don't think she ever changed it though.

@anbanan15: not sure..? I'm still not 100% sure what I'm supposed to do. lol.
I don't remember it being that expensive to change my name. I had to go through the court system bc I was changing my entire name--first, middle and last.

We have to fix M's name because SS messed up so instead of being first, middle, second middle, last... it's two firsts and two lasts. We're going to wait until she's old enough to decide what she really wants.

We added a second middle name for J when he was a month old. It was super easy. Except that you have to change the SS card in person and we haven't done that yet
oops
I wish we could change the spelling though! When I first saw his name is was Jacobi and I thought that was the common spelling. I wish I had spelled it Jacoby.. Oh well!

I had to get a name change done in GA as well but it's a long and lengthy process. I never changed my name when I got married and decided to a year after. I had to file a petition with the court, have it published for 4 weeks in a newspaper, wait for it to be placed in court schedule, go to court, stand before a judge, and then I was granted my name. It took about 3 months start to finish and about $150 for filing fees. It was in Gwinnett county and I know each county has different procedures.
There were several children there also getting name change as young as 2 doing the same process as me. I would check to see how late you can officially change on birth certificate bc I would imagine there's a time limit on when you can check it. If you have to go to court route, it's just a big headache like me.

@chopsuey119: Oh that's true! It wasn't much to change it due to marriage
I hope you figure out what all you have to do, but it sounds like you have a good idea already.

I had the same experience as @misolee when I legally changed my name. I had to correct a mistake (first name had a hyphen with my middle name) plus add DH's last name. I saw a few kids in court who had to legally change their names as well, and for the most part the judge easily granted them. It's just the process and fees that can be the hassle.
