I have old, gold light fixtures and I am going to try to spray paint them. If it works, great, if not then I'm only out $6.99 for the spray paint and I have to buy new light fixtures. But - has anyone tried it in real life? I see it done on blogs but don't know anyone who has "really" done it. Thoughts?

I haven't but I have old chandeliers I took down that I've been tempted to do this to as well. I'll be curious to hear what people say.

I've done it. You have to take some sand paper to it first. The lights haven't chipped at all.

I have! I used Rustoleum spray paint in rubbed bronze for 2 light fixtures on the side of my bathroom mirror. It looks great and has held up really well! (I did this about a year ago).

I have as well. I didn't even bother to sand first, we just took the whole thing apart to rewire it and then we sprayed it. Rustoleum is great, it has a trigger handle too, so your hand doesn't cramp.
My best tip is to set yourself up outside, in a spot where you can "hang" the fixture, so you can spray it and leave it to dry without touching it. I also take a small piece of cardboard and put that behind the piece I am spraying, to catch the excess.
