We just found out that someone copied our name for DD2! It's not a big deal to us, though. We're not close friends.

LO isn't here yet, but I'll be upset if a friend takes our name before we get chance to use it!

We haven't told anyone the names we have in mind, and so far no one else I know has taken them!

@runsyellowlites: What a b*
My cousin named her the same name as ours. We have had ours for years, and yes they knew it.

I don't have kids, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
I feel like people choose names based on what they like, not to spite someone or steal it.
I guess I can understand if someone is a little put off it they have a name picked out, tell someone, and that someone likes it and uses it. But they used it because they liked it the most, not to take if from you.
I guess I also wouldn't mind if a close friend's child had the same name as my child. I understand some people would.
I think I would be annoyed if a celebrity had a child with the same name and I would get questions if I chose my child's name because of that celebrity.
Also, I think it is fine to have family members with same first name, but I would draw the line at the same first and last name.

Name stealing RHOA edition. Kandi accused Kim of stealing her future boy's name Kash. Please keep in mind Kandi was not nor currently pregnant. Kim had a son and registers his name as a LLC. The boy's name is Kash Kade and I cannot help but think of Cascade the dish washing soap.

@crabbabs: But in using it, they do kind of take it from you, especially if it's an uncommon name.
Anyway, that's why I won't be telling anyone any of my name choices until my future kids are born. That way I avoid it completely. If someone chooses the same name, at least I know they didn't copy it from me!

hehe to be honest if someone i knew (close or not) used the same name as us, i'd be tickled silly and try to make the two kids best friends. but i totally understand if others feel the opposite!
if a friend used a name i 'liked' but had the baby first.... i'd still use it i think. i'm really attached to the names i love!

My SIL and I discussed names we liked right when she found out she was pregnant (2 years ago.) I told her our boy names bc they were (and are) set, the first being (My Mom's Maiden Name) James, after (obv) my mom's family and then James after my grandpa/uncle/cousin (huge family name) and DH's dad. SIL said if they had a boy it would be Charles Louis, after her husband's grandpa Charles, and her grandma Effie Lou.
Gender U/S, I get the text it's a boy, Charles James! I was like wow, way to steal the middle name I told you we'd use. She said "well you can use George that's his middle name!" I guess ignoring that it was a family name for me. And we really don't care, we'll still use it with boy 1 or 2 if we have them. It might bother her but OH WELL! I was just kind of surprised.

We *almost* stole a name... We love it, and we're not that close to the couple, but we ultimately decided against it. **runs away and hides**

Personally I would not care if someone named their kid the same name as mine. Close friend, family member, acquaintance-- I wouldn't care. No one has though. I get kind of annoyed with people who claim names. It was my pet peeve while pregnant. Don't tell a pregnant woman what you want to name your future child. People did this to me all the time as like they were letting me know that name was off limits. Anyways, I'll end my rant that has nothing to do with your original question.

@Andrea: Aw! When thinking of girl names for LO#2 (if it's a girl), I had been considering your DD2's name but couldn't bring myself to actually put it on the list because I feel like it's YOUR name Same with "Olive".

Not so far. DS's name is so common, I wouldn't considered it copied. DD's name probably won't be...but you never know. Maybe someone will honor her, or just like the name I used. It's kinda common, too, so I don't stake claim to it.

@pui: I understand what you are saying, but I don't see it that way. It might be the first place they heard it, but unless you completely created a new name, it existed before.
When you say "they took it from you" I feel like that implies that you can no longer use that name, which isn't true. It is almost like they are duplicating the name, not taking it.
I don't know if that makes sense - and I'm not trying to argue, just trying to explain my pov.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks for clearing that up. I was really confused and thought maybe I missed the memo that Kandi was pregnant. It's not stealing if you're not pregnant yet! They are both ridic.
@Rubies: No way, put it on the list!! Can't wait for you to find out the gender!

No, but one of DH's ex-girlfriends has a daughter with the exact same name as LO. It's not very common, and we found out after the fact. Luckily, it was one of the better exes.

No..... I've actually never met anyone around LO's age that has her name.
DH and I have talked about names for future LO's (I'm a planner!) and some possible boy's names are also names of either friends or family. But we name our LO's after deceased relatives, and I prefer to use the actual names and not just first initial. Which means we have a limited list, and then even more limited to the names DH and I agree on. So if my friend's husband happens to have one of those names..... oh well.

@crabbabs: I'm inclined to agree with you. I get that it would be annoying but I also think people who claim names when they aren't pregnant are a bit presumptious (we had friends who did that, though they did end up having the next baby a year later or so).
My dad's cousin actually used two of the same names that my parents did-- they used the exact same first and middle names of me and my younger sister. I was a flower girl at their wedding and always felt really flattered by it, though I suppose it was more because they liked the name than me personally

Not our DD's but someone copied my name as a kid. They asked my parents if they'd mind though, and my parents were confused as to why they even asked. I guess name stealing wasn't a huge deal back then when there weren't so many uncommon names?
If someone copied DD's full name it would be SO obvious because it's uncommon, but the nn she actually goes by is pretty common (not top 100 though)...I guess it would depend if the kids would be together a lot. That could get confusing. But otherwise I wouldn't mind.. we obviously had it first, if they like it THAT much, go ahead!

yup. somehow, through facebook, someone from DH's small hometown heard our name and decided to use it. we don't live near them and don't know them at all. we were kind of flattered!
