I was at Target when I was reaching for something on the top shelf. An elderly gentleman ran over and told me to stop and he would grab whatever I needed. He lectured me about not lifting my hands over my head during pregnancy because it might cause fetal distress and miscarriage.
My mom has told me this before but I have never heard anyone else mention it!

*Groan* Yup. Generally older people. I put it firmly in the category of old wives tale...but apparently it comes from old husbands, too!

*rolls eyes* Yes, usually the older generation. It's nonsense, but they are insistent that it will cause them to get tangled in the umbilical cord (which happens anyway and isn't a big deal) and cause fetal distress. I don't know how they make the connection between raised arms and movement inside your uterus, but they do...

Yes I've heard it more towards sleeping with your arms above your head at night. So of course that was the only way I wanted to sleep!

Omg I've heard this too and my response was,"if that we're true we'd be in a serious population shortage." It baffles me how strangers think its ok to alarm pregnant ladies! It's bad enough when it's your family lol.

Old wives tale for sure! My husband told me I shouldn't do pull ups anymore because of this. I looked at him like he was crazy--he didn't know it wasn't a true thing!

Interesting... I have found I have hurt myself a few times when I suddenly put my hands above my head (like when I was throwing my towel over the door, as you do).
I know its ligament pain but it makes me very tentative in my movements.
I suppose it might find its background in that? Maybe people felt pain and some of them had unrelated miscarriages and an old wives tail was born...?
