Someone mentioned to me recently that they gave their daughter their top 3 names and let her choose. I LOVE that idea but struggling to make it work with 2 kids. Right now DD6 is saying she wants to choose the first name and DS5 is saying he wants to choose the middle name, so it might work out.
Has anyone done anything similar? Any suggestions?

I have a friend whose parents let her brother choose her name, which is how she ended up being named Starblanket. So my only suggestion would be to set some limits.

@erinbaderin: that made me think of how Picabo Street ended up with her name, but her parents let her name herself at 3.
@JCCovi: I have not, but definitely loving the names you're letting them pick from is a safety net.

I know a family that let the oldest choose middle names for her two little brothers. The boys both have Disney prince middle names.

We wound up using one of my son's suggestions but it was only because we liked it. I would not have just given him the choice. He was 4yo. I would not have wanted a 4yo to pick out my name.
As it turns out he told us that we misheard him, and he meant another name that sounds similar to the one we actually used. Oh well! I don't think I would have used the other one anyway!

Oh and I’m thinking it would have to be a tiered approach. Like after DD picks the first name that will influence which names are presented to DS for the middle name.

I asked DD1 what she wanted to name DD2 (they are 2.5 years apart). For a girl she suggested her own name. For a boy, Goofy

My son did brow beat my husband into submission on naming our daughter Hazel. He heard me suggest it to my husband and took it as gospel that was what her name was. Anytime my husband tried to talk names our son would tell him "NO dad, my sister's name is Hazel".

This is why I have a nephew Luke... As in Skywalker :-).
My oldest picked my youngest name. He was fairly nonverbal, but really reacted to one name- Ryan. He heard it as Lion and started roaring. Now I have a "Ryan the lion who goes ROAR!!" (Because at 4 he can finally talk and hear)
For #3, I definitely will ask for input. I want a name that no one hates, but I make the final say.

@JCCovi: dd (2) only suggests three girl names, iris, isla, and Emmy, and we are having a boy soooo. I keep suggesting to her the names we are considering hoping she will latch onto one but so far, no dice.

My older son had a daycare friend who, when his mom got pregnant, assumed the baby’s name would be Weston because he thought all little brothers were named Weston, since that was what my son’s little brother was named. He was so insistent that they went with it.

I know someone who's older sister named her Princess.
So yeah. Boundaries are good.
My older daughter wanted to name the baby "Lilac." We ended up naming her Rosalind, we call her Rosie- I told my daughter we liked her flower name suggestion so we went in that direction, but that is a complete lie and we named her Rosalind for other reasons.

Aw, I love this! We did not bc our 2nd was a boy and we had a family name thing to go with...
I will note though that DD did, and still totally does, think that we had DS only bc she asked for him. She literally tells people this still to this day. It's kinda cute.... if only she could have picked his name too!!!!

@JCCovi: lol, at first I read this as you about to have your seventh baby !! My husband was named by his two older brothers, based on the name of a baby character on a seriously idiotic sitcom c.1981. But the name is a good one and they were out of boy names, so my in-laws went with it.

When my grandmother was pregnant with my aunt she asked my mom for her favorite name and that’s what they ended up naming her. Fast forward a couple decades and when my mom found out I was a girl it was still her favorite so now my aunt and I have the same name!

My mom's two older brothers named her. Side note, her mom was not a great mother soooo. Anyway, they named her Judy Suzy/Suzanne. My mom loves this story and I love it too.

If I let my DD have input, baby #2 would probably be named Sweetie, since that's what she's calling everything these days LOL So, I foresee a nickname happening, but, no, she had no input on the name we chose.

My niece wanted me to name my oldest Robot. We did not but we did decorate his room a little bit with robots and every time I saw clothes with robots, I had to buy them for him.

My oldest wanted to name the baby airplane. That obviously wasn’t happening, but we strongly considered Amelia (for Amelia Earhart) in reference to her suggestion.

We asked our older DD about name suggestions when I was pregnant with DD2 and ended up going with one of her names that coincidentally was already on our short list and was surprisingly traditional considering the others. Most were a little too 'fancy' (Lyria) or were names like Ocean and Sunflower.
But, we also fibbed a bit with her and told her that the baby would tell us her name when she was born. It's a special connection to a baby and its parents. So - she could suggest away, and we would talk to the baby before it was born, but it would tell us the right name once it was here. It was 100% to get out of the responsibility of telling her 'no' or letting her actually pick. But it felt sweet and is kind of true that we wanted to meet the new baby before we 100% decided the name.
