I am thinking about it!

I am "back to school" WHILE becoming a teacher. The school where I work offers a program through SUNY for international educators which most international schools consider the equivalent of a US state credential. So although it's not a credential program it's working well for me. You might consider becoming a private school teacher so you don't need the credential.

My DH just did! He completed a one year intensive Master's and certification program just this January. He is still looking for a permanent placement, but it was already a good decision for our family. He is so much happier!

I say go for it! One thing to keep in mind if you're doing it part time: you will need to complete classroom observation hours, even before student teaching. Just know that, because it might require juggling if you are also working full time.

My friend just did this. She had a BSc and was working at my company, went back to get her masters and came back to work with us. Then there were layoffs, she lost her job and has just now finished the two years to be a teacher. She loves it.

@locavore_mama: Nope. She was unemployed. Her SO supported her. I think all of her classes were during the day and she went into the classroom to student teach every 2 months.

I did it, though I was able to keep working pretty steadily while completing my courses and was only without pay while student teaching. I worked for my university, which significantly helped tuition costs.

I was fortunate to find a job right away, but the market is tough. I know that elementary special ed jobs are very competitive here but high school learning support is less so. It varies a lot by market though, and it sounds like you've done your research.

I've never regretted it once, even on the most terrible days at work. I also believe that having some experience outside the school system helps me deal with some of the bs present in my job. It's everywhere, and I don't have unrealistic expectations for my district. I just focus on my kids.

@Nskillet: okay, so...you definitely need a master's degree where you are. And I've heard MA is like NJ--hard to find jobs in education. You may have to substitute or take maternity leave replacements to get your foot in the door. But that might be great for you with two kids to slowly ease your way into the profession.

@Nskillet: Are there any universities nearby where you can do a masters basically free of charge in exchange for interning in a school? That's what I am considering.

My BIL is currently doing this now. He is going for a doctorate and is also working full-time. He has two kids and is finding the time to make everything work. Good luck with your decision!
