Someone close to me just submitted their application to teach english in Thailand. I'm so excited and nervous for them. I'm mostly nervous because they are always sick : ( What was your experience? What are some things they must do while in Thailand?

I have visited Thailand and I loved it! I went to Bangkok and Phuket. We had a lot of fun in both places - we did a lot of temple visits and boat rides in Bangkok but mostly we just enjoyed the food/night markets. In Phuket we did some boat rides out to other islands for snorkeling. It was a really amazing place! I think one of the new bloggers is living in Thailand right now? @Mrs. Gumdrop maybe?

If it makes you feel any better the hospitals in Bangkok are good. They do a lot of medical tourism there; the hospitals are nicer than hotels. That is in bangkok, however and I don't know where your friend will be. Chang Mai is great and interesting. The jungles are amazing. Beaches are beautiful and people are so, so nice. My inlaws lived there for 4 years, we visited while they were there. Chattachuk market in bangkok is amazing and overwhelming. The night markets in every town are can't miss. The country is sensory overload in a lot of ways and full of juxtapositions: excess and wealth, poverty and prostitution, yet beautiful and alive.

My dad is from there and all of his extended family still lives in Bangkok, so I've been numerous times. As for sickness (I'm assuming we are talking about food-related illness), I almost always get sick there, but the last time we traveled to Asia I took probiotics every day and didn't get sick at all. Bangkok has a huge expat community with western-style pharmacies and as @Littlebit7: said, good medical care. There is SO much to explore and the people of Thailand are extraordinarily welcoming and friendly with foreigners. Bangkok is extremely cosmopolitan. It would really be an amazing opportunity to live there for a few years and it's also an excellent jumping off point for exploring other countries.
As for things to do, I would definitely visit Chang Mai and the beaches in the south. We went to Ko Lanta last time which was very child friendly (actually, all of Thailand seems child friendly) and there's plenty to see if you want to island hop. There are literally thousands of temples (wats) to visit and the floating markets, while very touristy, are still a sight to behold.

I love Thailand, it was our homebase for a few months of travel in SE Asia a few years ago. I know there's a lot of political upheaval going on there, but it's unlikely to affect foreigners visiting. As for illness, there are some excellent hospitals in Bangkok, and pharmacies have all the OTC things we can find in the US. She might look into travel insurance to cover costs, but in general things aren't super pricey there.

My husband and i went to Thailand for a couple weeks a few years ago and we loved it. Great food, great people, great nature, great culture.
My favorite part of the country was northern Thailand - the Golden Triangle region and Chaing Rai. We also learned to SCUBA in Kohn Samui, which was really awesome. And Bangkok was a must have. If I go back, I think we'll try to spend some more time in Western Thailand, which we enjoyed but didn't have much time in. We did Bank
Actually, our favorite part of that trip wasn't in Thailand -we did a few day excursion to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat that was amazing. One of the coolest places I've ever seen. And absolute must do.

Thailand is lots of fun - nice beaches, jungle to explore, vibrant culture, amazing food...and as others have said, healthcare is good! People from Asia (as well as, I assume, Europe) often go to Thailand to have cosmetic work and dental work done!
Hua Hin is a fun place to go stay at the beach, rent a little villa, and get away from it all. Phuket of course has the classic "tropical" beaches, and there are some elephant rehabilitation centers they can visit and interact with elephants (depending on how they feel about that - I personally believe the good ones are helping rather than harming the animals) - we went to Elephant Hills an Khao Sok (Souk?). I don't remember a lot about Bangkok except the busy nightlife/markets.

Go to Chiang Mai in November for Loi Krathong/Yi Peng, the lantern festival! It's beyond description, the most amazing experience we've ever had. That, and Patara Elephant Farm (ethical and humane day spent interacting with elephants) were life highlights for us on our trip. While she's living there she might also take a trip to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat, which is stunning.

My husband had a work conference there this spring and my Mom and I went along with the kids. While he worked we traipsed all over Bangkok and the surrounding areas and absolutely loved it! It was incredibly hot to have a 2 year old and 1 year old in tow, but it was a phenomenal trip!
