A couple of threads tonight have me wondering -- has your LO ever had a reaction to a vaccine and if so what was it (however minor)?
I really do NOT want this to become a debate on vaccines so if you want to debate them please do that elsewhere - just am genuinely curious because they tell you about potential side effects and I'm just curious how often they actually happen.

B almost always gets a fever. Luckily, other than that, we haven't had any other side effects. We originally thought he got a rash from his MMR vaccine but it ended up just being (unrelated) hives.

H gets a fever usually, and this time her MMR has given her a fever and a rash.

@Ra: Hives? Does he have an allergy? I get hives from dairy products, grrr! (And you know I'm on HB too often when my autocorrect tried to turn "grrr" into "FRER"...

You can see that statistically, serious side effects are extremely rare. Much rarer (and often milder) than the diseases from which vaccinations protect you.

I think mine responded to the rotavirus vaccine the first two times they gave it to her. She was very cranky and had GI issues for a few days. I thought she had MSPI flareups both times but I hadn't eaten anything I shouldn't have. I only figured it out in hindsight.

She was as 2 months...maybe 4? When she had her first and only reaction...hot, hard lump at the vaccination site. She wouldnt stop crying so we gave her a bath and massaged it. Then she was fine.

She has had super mild things that could have been a reaction or could have just been baby. I think one time she had a slight fever, and often she is cranky but that could just be because her thigh hurts, you know? After the first ones she did sleep for a long time, which was pretty great. Nothing at all note worthy for us. My friends son always gets very cranky and gets a fever, even after tylenol.
@coopsmama: my phone tried to autocorrect poop to pooplosion today.
Eta: actually she always seems to have one really nasty diaper after shots. Which ties right back in to my note...

He got a few at his 12 month appointment and had a mild rash for a few days. Might have even been from the bandaid since his skin can be sensitive. There have been times I thought he was extra tired or cranky but that was tough to distinguish with my little guy!

Yes. Between my two, we've had fevers, crankiness, rash and vomiting. I'm at the point where I hate going for our well check-ups bc the vaccines suck so much!

My LO had a reaction to the chickenpox vaccine at 12 months. She had a large red lump at the vaccination site that spread horizontally so it was about 2 inches x 1/2 inch on her thigh. It took a long time to go away, but her doc said that it isn't uncommon.

After her 2 month shots she was really sleepy all day, no fever or crankiness. After her 4 month shots she seemed okay but then woke up from her next nap really really cranky and clingy and wanted to be held all day long (really odd for her)-- but no fever. Due to her 4 month crankiness I gave her motrin before her 6 month shots and she was totally fine all day until 8 hrs after I had dosed her and she got cranky (I didn't give her a second dose bc she had seemed so unaffected all day).

@coopsmama: I don't know! It was so crazy. He had really horrible hives that covered his whole body/face on and off for a few months. Our doc wasn't concerned and said it would be more trouble than it's worth to figure out the cause (since there were no other symptoms) and just told us to give him half of a chewable Claritin whenever he broke out. I never changed detergents/cleaning products/foods and they finally went away and haven't come back in almost 6 months. So random.

DS only reacted to the first flu shot - he had a fever overnight, and it was gone in the morning. He dealt with the second shot just fine, even though he got it the same day as MMR (I wasn't at the appointment and was very ticked off that DH asked for two "difficult" shots in one day).

My LO had low grade fevers, fussiness, and extended sleeping from a couple of vaccines. She got a temporary bump from another that caused MIL to call the doctor while we were on vacation (oops, should have told her about the vaccines). Nothing major.
My nephew had one of the moderate reactions listed on the CDC site above. Frequency of 1 in 40,000. He was hospitalized for five days. He still got the booster which I thought took a lot of faith on my SIL's part. It made me very nervous to vaccinate my LO.

She definitely had high fevers (102-103) the night after a couple of her shots when she was an infant. I think it might've been the Rotovirus shot, I can't remember. She also got pretty good size knots at the injection sites for awhile. The last couple vaccines have been reaction free.

Nothing here once he is done getting the shot itself and crying. I know many people who's babies do get a low grade fever though.

My oldest never reacted to a vaccine until recently when he got his 4-6 year old varicella (chicken pox) booster. The area around his injection site turned red and round about 3 inches wide. He had a low grade fever of 99/100 for a day and the redness went away in about 3 days. He was fine otherwise and we just monitored. I gave him some claritin (it was all I had) just in case.

My eldest had a super high fever after one round--pretty sure it was a reaction to the pneumococcal. My littlest seems fine immediately after, and then screams and screams about 6 hours, for hours, after each round. every. time.

Between the two LOs we've had a bunch of different reactions: fevers, swelling at site, diarrhea, sleepiness etc. The only reaction that was traumatizing for me was non stop crying for 24 hours.

After his 2-month shots, he was very sleepy, clingy, and fussy, and then wound up with a fever in the middle of the night that night. No fever after the 4-month shots because the ped okayed giving Tylenol before bed to preempt dealing with one in the MOTN, but still very clingy, fussy, and sleepy. My policy (after the 2-month shots where he was awake for a few hours in the MOTN with a fever and fussiness) is that I will only schedule appointments with vaccines on Fridays so we can nap the next day if his nighttime sleeping gets messed up!

DS always had fevers until he was about a year. He also had vomiting after his meningitis B vax this past year, but I'm not totally sure if it was a reaction to the vax or some sort of virus because it was 4-5 days later.
DD never had any reactions until she got the MMR and had a high fever followed by a rash. She just got another vax yesterday and had a fever during the night but seems fine today.

Not once. My son has super sensitive skin though, so the band aids give him a rash.

Not really. She was a little crabby the day she got like, 3 shots...but I think it's because her legs were tender and the bandaids left big red marks.

L had a lump at the injection site once, and got super super mild chickenpox after the chickenpox vaccine. For 2 month and 4 month shots she was really sleepy afterwards, but nothing concerning.

Just low grade fevers the day after some vaccines (but who knows whether the fever was caused by the vaccine, or just happened to be the day after)
