I really like reading news stories online but I get really put off by all the hateful comments posted underneath. No matter what the story is about people always post extremely mean things either about the author of the post or the content. I feel like people like to hide behind the anonymity of their online accounts and just spew out negativity. The same applies for some online forums, one person posts a question and people respond with really horrible things.
I wonder why some people are so mean online and seem so full of hate.

I think you're right in that they feel empowered by the anonymity and think that they can really let loose on people. It's sad that people treat other human beings in that fashion! I wouldn't ever think to say something online that I wouldn't say to someone who was standing right in front of me!

It's awful. My cousin's 2 year old son has a really rare disease that would have killed him if he'd been born even 20 years ago or less. Their local news did a story on him (to help get the word out because even doctors are rarely aware of it and can have trouble diagnosing it), and the comments were just horrible. Saying they should have just let him die and things like that.

@Torchwood: that's hideous! I try not to read them. And they aren't useful. I kinda think they should stop allowing it and if people feel the need to be nasty, let them post a link on their Facebook or blog.

I think it's partly due to anonymity, and partly because people can find it really easy to ignore the fact that other humans will be reading the completely terrible, hateful things they write online. Even when sites require a Facebook login to comment on a story (I know plenty of news websites require this), people write such awful things!
At the risk of sounding like a suck-up...thank you, Hellobee folks, for making this a pretty safe space to comment, even if we sometimes disagree.

My friend calls it "keyboard balls". People say whatever they want from behind the safety of their computer screen. Just another way technology has detached us from one another.

I'm glad I am not the only one that is bothered by this. I remember being horrifed after a nanny in new york murdered two kids she was watching and all the comments were blaming the mom for having a nanny in the first place.
I also wonder why they even think such mean things in the first place and then go further to share it with others -
@sosaysmegan: yes thats the good thing about hellobee, we all have different opinions, but i think we manage to disagree respectfully and then move on. Hope it stays like this forever!

Yeah, why are people so negative?? It annoys me.
Sometimes I read them to see just how rediculous people can be. I can only read a couple comments before I need to close the window.

I hate it and what really bugs me is that it seems to be everywhere no matter what. I feel like people should moderate websites more and delete the ones that are full of pure hateful content.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if it sucks. One of the side effects of the internet is that people are more vocal with these opinions.

CNN is the worstworstworst. I can't even look. When there's a story about Mexico I have to just stop myself from scrolling down.

I almost never even look at the comments because either my blood pressure or bile will start to rise. I made the mistake yesterday of skimming the comments on a video of a woman being asked to stop BF in public and a lot of the comments were calling the mother an exhibitionist slut, others talked about if it's out it's their right to stare/latch on themselves, and a ridiculous amount comparing NIP (she was wearing a nursing tank and no cover) to defacting on the floor in public.
After that I reminded myself never again--again.

My friend is a journalist and her motto is "Never read the comments!" - she says you will despair of humanity if you do!

You can disagree with someone without being a butthole.
I've found that the people who have the capabilities to post such negative things are just opening up negativity and hatred into their lives. I choose not to read those comments and to definitely not post one of my own. If they want to live that kind of life, fine. But I'm staying away from it.

I think some people just let their crazy out in the comments. Anonymity contributes for sure but my husband's paper (he is a journalist) uses facebook for comments and people still say some pretty awful things.
People also say/write/email pretty awful things to reporters, so it makes me happy to see you all react to the comments this way. Thanks for being awesome.

@SweetMamaM:@gilmoregirl: that's interesting bc my local paper now *requires* reporters to interact on the comments and they go batshit for any story that will generate tons of comments and page views - even when it has no relevance to our community.
But yeah, news trolls are THE WORST.
