One of my daughter's classmates had a birthday party yesterday from 5:15 to 7pm. I picked her up after work, took her to the party, drove her the 30 minutes home, finally got her to bed late (8:15) and I was exhausted! I think we may have to decline any after work/school parties in the future.

Yep, 5:15 to 7 on a weekday for a 5 year old. And it was an hour in rush hour each way. I declined because there's no way,

No, I don't think I know any kids that age for whom that is a "good" time of day! I'd envision a LOT of melt downs (from the birthday boy/girl as well as from guests!)

Not a child's party but we've gone together to adult weekday dinner parties several times. That said, she is never asleep before like 9pm anyway and doesn't meltdown when she gets tired - if those were different I probably wouldn't go to weekday evening parties with her.

We've been to one evening weekday party for a 4 year old. The parents are both teachers and it was during their Spring Break. They acknowledged the "weird" timing of it but it was the only day they could book for the venue last minute, so we understood.
DH and I both just worked from home that day and kept the kids home from daycare. Party was til 6:40pm, got home at 7pm. It wasn't too bad.

Yes, but they were Friday evenings so at least a later bedtime wasn't as big of a deal for school/work the next day.
