I just called the cops on someone who locked their dog in the car (it is in the 80s). I cannot stand for animal cruelty. It has to be over 100 degrees in that car.

I had to call animal control once at work (I work at a library) because some people left their dog in the car while using the computers for over an hour. A patron brought it to our attention and we card since it was our parking lot. We ended up paging the owners to tell them animal control was going to take their dog...I'm pretty sure the lady gave them a stern talking to.

Yikes, I hope they come quickly! I almost called the cops the other day when I saw a kid left in the car on Starbucks but the mom came out right when I was about to call. I don't understand that -- just take the kid into Starbucks! Are you really so unwilling to unbuckle them from the carseat?

@MrsH: Well I hope the cops come fast. Are any of the windows slightly rolled down? Maybe you can at least pour some water in if it comes to that.

That makes me furious. I haven't had to call the cops for something like that myself, but I sure wouldn't hesitate!

I haven't seen anyone leave their animals in the vehicle without the windows rolled down, but if I did you better believe I'd be calling the cops in hot weather!
We actually had one of the hardware stores here put a sign out saying to please bring your pets into the store, we do not want them left in your vehicles! Kinda neat, I thought!

I've done this three times. My husband laughs at me b/c I get so mad and thinks I'm being silly, but I don't care--the dog can die, so all I'm worried about is that the dog stays alive.

@MrsH: Good job! That's a legit call!
I call the non-emergency line quite often. Sometimes I get scared and call. (Ummm... this is lame and has only happened twice.) Othertimes I'm being a vigilant neighbor.

I called once when we were driving behind someone who was clearly inebriated, we followed them to the highway and no one ever came!

I would absolutely call the cops in a situation like that; it's a very dangerous situation. Ugh , people suck.
I've only called 911 when we woke up to our neighbors house on fire, and I've called highway patrol several times on people who were clearly driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and when I saw an accident happen.

Yes...called the cops on neighbors who were leaving their tiny dogs out in the rain, snow, subfreezing weather. Cops said it wasn't their domain so I called the SPCA who came out and bought the woman's lies about the dogs being cared for.
I've also called the nonemergency line about their next door neighbors who installed a sound system in their basement and around their pool and were watching really loud movies and having 7-hour-long parties with mega bass.

I called the aspca/animal cops on someone in my building where i used to live. Their cat was living in a 500 sq foot apartment with 4 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. They let it out into the hall and its eyes were extremely infected. I was glad i did it.
Eta: un-animal related, i had to call the cops on a highway accident last year. My husband pulled the people out of a burning car! Crazy.

@spaniellove: We've called the cops on neighbors for leaving their large dogs chained up in their backyard 24/7. They never cleaned up after them and we never saw them care for them. Their fur was falling out. Animal control did nothing.

I once called the cops because I was behind a truck that side swiped a parked car! He knocked their side view mirror right off and kept on driving.
Hope they were able to rescue that dog!

I called to report an accident once, and another time called on accident while trying to use a calling card!

yup. a few times when I heard a loud, scary fight happening down the street, and once when someone was creeping around the yard/jumped a fence to our neighbors yard. My general policy is, its not my job to decide if it warrants police intervention or not, and it doesn't hurt for them to swing by and check. Rather that than someone get hurt.

If I saw a dog/animal locked in a car, yes. There was just an instance here where a woman was beating a dog in the middle of the street. I do NOT tolerate people who do not know how to take care of their animals.

@MrsH: Yes, we did the same thing a few years ago! DH saw a puppy locked in a car for an entire day, so at the end of the day he called the cops. It was the cutest german shepard puppy, and we went to visit it at the police station after it was taken out... I know DH was itchin' to take it home! But I think a police officer was interested, so hopefully the cutie found a good home.

Yup... I came home one day to an intruder in our house (when I still lived with my parents) so I called the cops that day. I think that's the only time though.

In your case I would totally call the cops (or for children). I call the cops all the time, we have a lot of unruly teenagers who destroy the public park next to our house by drinking and then smashing the bottles or doing drugs. I'm probably that annoying old lady in the neighborhood but I don't care

i was in the middle of breaking up with a boyfriend when we had to pause to call the cops because we heard screaming out his window and then saw a guy punch someone else and push a woman onto the ground. It happened right on the street and i didn't want to be one of the onlookers who did nothing and regretted it. So we called, waited until the cops came, then proceeded with ending our relationship. Kind of a crazy day.

I haven't, but I would call in a heartbeat if I feel an animal is being abused.
