My parents live close to the epicenter of the recent Los Angeles earthquake, and my mom said that it was the strongest earthquake she'd ever experienced since they were so close to the epicenter (way stronger than Northridge).
There was some damage -- vases fell, bookcases got knocked over, but mostly my parents were startled!
I've experienced a lot while living in California (and there was actually a small one in New York a couple years ago).
Have you ever experienced one?

Technically yes, the one on the east coast a few years ago, but to be honest I had been sitting outside on a porch while my nieces were playing and didn't realize what it was until after the fact. I noticed my chair vibrating but assumed there was a cat rubbing against the legs or something.

Yes, in college. My roommate and I were getting ready for class when it happened...I think it was 2001 in Seattle. It wasn't bad but I guess in other areas 30+ miles out people felt it much stronger and had items fall off their shelves

Yes, when I was in Ecuador there was a pretty strong one. It was early morning, and I was awake but still in bed. The bed started shaking pretty violently! My thought process was "what the...why is the bed shaking...wait, is this an earthquake? Omg, an earthquake!" And then it was over, ha.

Only once, when I was in Taiwan for a summer as a child. Earthquakes are pretty much what is keeping me from moving to CA!

@Mrs. Bee: Just that small one we had a couple of years ago. I was pregnant at the time and we didn't know that it was an earthquake. People were freaking out thinking it was a terrorist attack, my co-workers and I thought it was a construction accident (we had to evacuate a few months before because of something that went wrong with shoring up of a building next to us that may have damaged the foundation).
So, we didn't know it was an earthquake until we got outside. I almost peed my pants. I think I would poop my pants if I experienced a real one. Me no likey.

I live in KY. We don't usually have earthquakes. I think There have been 3 since I've been alive (all minor) but I only felt 1. I was sitting around the house and everything started to shake. I thought I had laundry in the washer and it got off balance. Then I remembered I wasn't doing laundry so I thought my house was haunted.
That's how rare earthquakes are here. Lol

The ones I remember are the one on the East Coast a few years ago and the 1989 earthquake in Northern CA.

Yes; a few. There was a good one in Seattle before we moved where our floors were moving like waves - scary but also incredibly cool. We had earthquake drills growing up, too.

Yes, both in California and Virginia. I was in a work meeting when the earthquake started and my CA school training kicked in. I made everyone duck and cover under the big table. They were so distraught afterwards that the office closed for the day.

Nope. Moved to the west coast 5 years ago and thought I would be able to feel an earthquake. Nope, but instead my east coast family and friends did.

I experienced both of the recent ones in VA (2010 and 2011)
The first one woke me from sleeping and I just thought I was motion sick. The second one did some damage at work (we had chimneys fall on 100+ year old buildings and half of the building I work in now was closed for about two years because of repairs)
It was more scary than dangerous though. Giant chunks of plaster and insulation fell from our drop ceiling.

Yes. Growing up on a small island in the pacific, there were earthquakes all the time. Then I lived in California for 13 years and, well, have felt quite a bit there as well. Felt my first one on the east coast the other year. Then now in Asia, there has been 3 since we moved here 6 months ago. The strongest being about 6.3. We live in a high rise apartment building that is a year old so I didn't feel it much. It was definitely startling though!
I'm glad to hear that your parents are okay. Wow, I hadn't realize how big that earthquake was! I have many friends who live in Southern CA!

I was pretty darn close to the epicenter on Friday night and I don't think it was anything close to the feeling of the Northridge earthquake. I even remember the Whittier Narrows quake which also felt much stronger. I was in my office on Saturday when a 4.1 aftershock hit.... I got the eff out of the so quick!

So I live in California and I've only felt two! The biggest one was actually pretty small too at 4.5. We are just waiting for another "Big One" to hit the Bay Area though....

Yup! Grew up in SoCal. We actually moved right after the Northridge earthquake (not because of it). And we had one a couple years ago here in DC.

yes. a few tremors in northern california, but the biggest by far that i saw damage from was the august 2011 earthquake.

Yes, once while I was at work. I work in a high rise in Philadelphia, and a year or two ago (I'm going to estimate that wrong), we had an earthquake. It was pretty scary since we aren't used to getting them, but our building actually responded pretty well. It honestly felt like the floor was like a waterbed (which is apparently supposed to happen to prevent structural collapse). Scary nonetheless!

Yep, the 2001 Nisqually earthquake in WA state was the biggest at 6.8. I was about 20 miles from the epicenter but it was so scary!
We haven't had a big one since.

Yep! I was at work, alone in a creepy building, when the one hit Friday night. No thanks.
I have felt too many to count over the course of my life. I'll take small ones every day of the week over a large one.

Yes, two that I remember. One was just a tremble - we felt it through the floor and were all "What was that??" and then later heard on the news it was an Earthquake. The second time, we felt it AND heard this loud rumble! I thought our furnace had blown up and made Hubs go check the basement, haha! Nope! Just an earthquake!
But we also live in an area where earthquakes are few and far between and the ones we get are pretty mild. Nothing falling off the shelf or anything like that!

Stacks of 'em! NZ is right on the edge of a tectonic plate so we seem to be constantly shaking although I don't think you ever get used to the feeling. I was very thankful to not be living in Christchurch 3-4 years ago when the big quakes struck.

All.the.time. I have lived in Orange County my entire life {excluding my college years} and they still scare me. Actually I feel like now that I have kids I'm even more anxious about them because I worry about getting to my kids if they're not with me.
Friday's earthquake was extra nerve wracking because it was immediately followed by an aftershock so it felt like one, long earthquake.
