We have to get rid of our cat. I don't know any friends or family that want a cat. I am scared to just put a listing out and give her to a stranger.
How will I know if they will treat her right?? Have you ever done this?

I've never given a pet away, but we took a pet from a stranger.
I would recommend asking around and asking friends to ask around.
We wanted to get a dog and we were planning to go to a shelter. Through the grapevine, we heard that one of DH's employee's aunts was looking for a home for a puppy. So we met her and the dog and took him for a walk. We took a few days to make sure we were ready for another pet and then took him home.

We haven't either but maybe a Facebook post to get feelers out there? Or a few emails? If you want a dog I could have her shipped to ya

Sadly, I have. I miss him tons, but I just graduated from College and was moving to a different state for my job. All the apartments I looked at had a heavy pet deposit ($800) AND a monthly pet rent/fee because he was a larger dog (lab). Since it was my first job, I couldn't afford the extra expense and felt bad having him cooped up in a tiny lil apartment all day while I was at work with no yard.
When I gave him away, I checked in with the girl all the time and asked for pictures. Now, he's working with a group of other dogs as rescue animals that look for humans trapped under something in a disaster/emergency! I still miss him like crazy though.... =(

We've also taken a pet from a stranger. Some friends of friends had to give up their puppy and we happened to be considering getting a second dog. Our mutual friends introduced us, and we ended up keeping the little guy. The previous owners used to call sometimes to check on him or we would meet them at the park for a visit, so they knew he had a good home.

First, I would ask around for friends or friends who may want to adopt, so you can at least get one more secondary opinion of this person.
If that turns up nothing and you end up on Kijiji/Criag's List, put that the pet costs a small amount of money like $60-$100 depending on your area. That way you screen out people who are not even willing to spend a bit of money on the pet.

My friend adopted her dog from a stranger via a craigslist posting. It was a totally normal family who had gotten the dog as a puppy then realized they just couldn't handle it. He has major separation anxiety and is super high maintenance. She responded to the ad right away and went to pick him up that same day!

I did my dog got a major illness that led to blindness and it just was not going to work with R chasing her as well as our cat doing sneak attacks. I called pet rescues and they put her on their Facebook pages as well as contacting people who might take her. Long story short- I was contacted by someone who saw her on FB and after emailing and talking we traveled and dropped her off. She was able to get medical attention (eyes removed!), and is now happy in her new home and a therapy dog. The owner sends me photos ) Good luck!

I would try as hard as I could to find someone who I knew or who a friend knew. People do horrible things to animals and I would not be comfortable with a stranger.
