In college there was an older guy who would park outside or house. It took ages for the cops to catch him. Not sure what came of it INB the end.

Once late night on the subway there was a trench coat guy who exposed himself. I thought that was a cliche.

Twice on the subway in NYC and once on the beach.

I'm sorry this happened, people are crazy.

I read a blog post a couple of weeks ago and she posited that if we expanded our definition of securely aisle to include all the crap it should include such as people exposing themselves in an unwanted way, cat calls, being harassed etc that there wouldn't be many if any women that could say they aren't a victim of sexualized assault. Rather, we learn or are taught that it's frequently best to ignore these incidents and to walk away because indecent exposure is better than rape. It sucks and it's awful.

@Cole: yup. I remember the time I was late to work because of some guy on the Subway feeling me up (I reported it, making me late). I explained to my supervisor and she (yes, she!) said, "oh yeah, that happens this time of year when women start wearing dresses because it's warmer." I was wearing a dress. Way to make me feel even worse

When I was in elementary school, I'd often go to the public library after school. And there was this middle aged guy who'd often sit in the cubicle next to mine and masturbate. I barely understood what he was going but I'd sit there trying not to notice and wishing he'd go away. I wish I'd screamed or made a fuss or told the librarian! It's so upsetting to think about.

Crazy to think 35% of responders have had this happen! This is all part of the recent conversation about women fielding constant unwanted sexual overtures/assaults.

When this conversation first happened, I thought...wow, I've been so lucky to not have any of this happen to me.

But THEN I started recalling the many, many times that this stuff has happened that I just brush off because I've been so conditioned by circumstances to think this shit happens to everyone and it's not that big of a deal. Like the time I was walking through a club, and a random guy in the crowd grabbed my butt. Like the 3 (!) times on the subte on Buenos Aires where I was groped during rush hour. Like the time I was walking in Antigua, Guatemala and a guy riding his bike went by and grabbed my butt as he rode past. And there are other instances.

It's all disgusting.

One time my friend and I were playing at the beach when we were both 11. A random man in his 20s (?) came over and started building sand castles with us. He crouched down and his penis entirely hung out of his trunks. It took probably about 20-30 seconds for us to realize it, we got all embarrassed and made some excuse to leave. We thought it was an accident but looking back now I don't think so. A 20-year old playing with and *accidentally* exposing himself to two preteen girls doesn't seem plausible.

No and I'm surprised how common this is.

Not exposing themselves but when I lived in NYC, there was a dude on the subway opposite me with his junk down one leg of his pants and he was rubbing himself. As soon as I noticed, I got off and switched cars because that was weird AF.

Yes, twice.

Yes. I was in like 4th grade I think. He got out of his car with just a cropped shirt on. Just stood there as my friend and I rode our bikes past him.

Not that I know of, thankfully. I used to run without my glasses so if it happened then, I wouldn'5 have seen it. I am so sorry that it's happened to so many though.

I had it happen at the public library when I was 12 or 13. I was with a group of girlfriends and his guy was wearing short jogging shorts and just had his junk hanging out on the chair. It was extremely disgusting. Luckily it was in public and he was actively trying to interact with us.

@turquoisemama: you're absolutely not a prude for feeling that way! That's absurd! It is so crappy though that it's a totally normal feeling reaction whereas they are the ones in the wrong. What a terrible, systemic problem.

What is wrong with men that they feel the need to do this? Women don't seem to do it.

@newlypregnantlady: This is exactly what the officer I spoke to said, this type of behaviour usually progresses into more violent incidents.
