I have never had a dog. We want to get one for LO when she's a wee bit older . . . so they can grow up together!

@MsLipGloss: Fun!! M adores dogs, but we're not gonna get her one.
I'd love to get a puppy for the kids one day, but I can't deal with the maintenance!

Yes...we don't take her in the car during from late spring to fall, but otherwise she goes everywhere with us and is pretty used to waiting in the car. She has a dog car seat to curl up in, so she usually falls asleep.

Nope, too afraid of him escaping through the fence (that's happened before when I've been home) or tearing p the car if we leave him in there alone!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
Never. We don't put the dog in the car unless we are going straight from point A to point B, where he will be let back out of the car (park, IL's home, etc..) If we do have to stop at the store or something someone stays in the car with the dog and the car keeps running. Here in Michigan it seems to almost always be cold enough to have the heat on or hot enough for the A/C, and I'd feel awful exposing him to extreme temps, especially if I was gone for longer than planned. Too many tragic stories of owners forgetting or their errand taking longer than usual, and the dog paying the ultimate price for it.

I never ever leave her outside. We don't have a fenced backyard and she is easily spooked. I severely limit how much I leave her in the car. I worry that someone will try to steal her.

@T.H.O.U.: sorry, must've clicked that by accident when I was moving the thread into the Pets board!

Car - only for like 5 mins or less if we're on a long drive and need a bathroom break. Usually DH is with me though so we rotate.
Outside - she hangs out in our back yard (totally fenced) all the time and even that freaks me out. I could never leave her tied to a bike rack or something...1) she is too smart and would probably find a way to get out of her harness/leash and 2) she is too cute and I am convinced someone would steal her.

@mrbee: thanks! I was confused by the importance of this on an early Sunday morning!! Have a great Sunday with your family.
I guess to answer the question our dog stays outside during the day. I have once or twice tied him up outside a store while I ran in. Not like in a Walmart, but a small store where I could basically see him the whole time. I also take him for errands some times when it's cooler outside and we leave the windows open.

I have before, but only for a few seconds, with the windows down, in a parking spot where I can see her. Usually, it is if I have to do something quick, like drop off a letter, etc. But not if it is hot out, ever!
Funny story: if I do leave her, she always sits in the drivers seat until I'm back. No idea why??
Eta: she adores riding in the car. I think it is so cute

@T.H.O.U.: sorry Charlie woke up a lot last night and I'm still groggy! Making coffee now...

@Lovelyplum: my last dog would do that, too! And she wouldn't just hop back, so I would have to take out out of the car and walk her back in her spot.
My friend once tied her friendly and mellow lab to a lamp post downtown while we had coffee inside. It was fun to watch people stop to talk and pet her. One guy even left a package beside her as he went inside to run errands.

@LovelyPlum my dog waits in the driver's seat too!
My dog LOVES riding in the car. I will take him if I have short errands to run like running into the post office etc if the weather is ok. I leave windows down. He has started to bark extra loud when I leave him outside the post office for some reason!

We've left her in the car for a short amount of time with all windows rolled down and only when it's not to cold or to warm. Sometimes we need to run in Kroger after going to the vet and they don't allow dogs. But if it's the pet store, we take her in with us.
watermelon / 14206 posts
Only a couple times in the car.
We never leave them outside alone.
nectarine / 2771 posts
Nope to both. He's always inside and we never take him to run errands unless someone can stay behind and sit in the car with him. He doesn't care when we leave the house, but he gets serious separation anxiety if he gets left behind in the car and will whine/bark incessantly. We also can't leave the windows open because he'll try to fit through the gap, no matter how small, in an effort to follow us, and has hurt himself trying before.

No to outside, yes to the car. The dogs are completely used to being crated in the car because of all the agility trials we travel to. And I would sometimes stop by the supermarket for a few things late at night after agility class.
Never in extreme temperatures though. If too warm out I have an extra car key and I leave the a/c running with the doors locked. Usually that's for a quick run into somewhere to grab something to eat and bring back out to the car. Most trials are an hour+ away from home.

We walk to our local store and dining place and he waits outside for us with a bowl of water. He loves the pets he gets as people go by and the shady spots we tie him up in.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
It's actually against the law in NJ to leave your pet unattended in a car, so we never do. He loves rides though, so sometimes we'll all go out for a quick errand and one of us will run in and the other will stay with the dog and LO.

never! our puppy would not sit still and our older dog would freak out if we left her. i'm such a worrier I could never do it anyways!
grapefruit / 4862 posts
Not outside, but very rarely in the car, as long as it's not even close to being too hot. Usually we're both in the car if we're driving them anywhere though. Funny story- DH was taking two of our three to the vet once 2 weeks before our wedding, while I was getting my hair dyed. While he was pumping gas, the pugs locked him out of the car!!!!! He called me to come open it but I was downtown with dye in my hair- not happening. $65 for a locksmith unfortunately and he was NOT happy. Luckily it was early March so no risk to them with heat.

I leave him outside only if I can see him from where I am (ie: I'll go into the bakery, where I can see him from the line, but not the grocery store, where I can't). I'll leave him in the car no problem, though, with the windows down, as long as it's not hot outside. In Seattle, that's usually the case. If it was over 80, I wouldn't, but that is so rare that it's not really on my radar.

We have left her in the car but it was during the winter and we used our remote start to keep her warm. (We were on a road trip during Christmas.) During the summer months, we either leave her at home or if we take her, we make sure one of us stays in the car. We haven't used the remote start in my car in the summer yet.
Here in Seattle it doesn't get that hot. Now, if I was on the east coast, I'm sure my dog would stay home instead of travel with us, so I don't have worry about her.
As for leaving my dog outside... we can't leave her alone because she'll cry and might bark. We have had lunch outside on the patio so she can stay with us.
Haha. My dog has been in a taxi, too. First time this summer.

We have left her in the car when we're just running in. Always with the window rolled down a bit. Never in the winter or summer; our winters can get below freezing.
grapefruit / 4649 posts
I have left our dog in the car on rare occasions when I am running in somewhere on the way to or from a place we take him- windows rolled down, less than 5 minutes, not hot and ideally over cast type of situation though.
Our town is super walkable and it is very common too see dogs leashed outside places. He comes along for quick trips to Trader Joe's, the pharmacy, coffee shops (they all have pet friendly outdoor seating) and several restaurants either let dogs on the terrace or he can sit outside the fence but right next to the table.

i have left my dogs outside of starbucks, for about 5 minutes. this is not something i would have done in nyc, because there is too much foot traffic and they are small enough that it would have been easy for someone to steal them. we live in the burbs now and it's pretty quiet.
i have not left them in the car. my sister did when she went to the drugstore for 10 minutes on a mild winter day.

We only leave him in the car when we're on a long drive downstate and we stop to get gas and use the bathroom, so it's not for more than 10 minutes. He always gets into the driver seat too, like @LovelyPlum said...lol. I've only left him outside when we left once, and that was on accident. I called my FIL to let him back in. Our guy really only goes in the car if we are specifically taking him somewhere, like my day's house downstate or the vet or groomers or something. I never just bring him with me to run errands.

I don't ever leave mine outside alone because I am afraid of someone taking him. I will occasionally leave him in the car for 5 minutes to run into the store, but never ever in the summer, and not if it is extremely cold.

We leave the dog in the car when the weather is mild. Always with the windows cracked. We've occasionally left him outside of a store tied up, but never for longer than 10 minutes. He just sits down and waits.

We only leave her in teh car if someone is with her, I wouldn't want her to get scared or someone call us in (that happens around here a lot.) She is only outside if we are home.

Occasionally on the way back from the dog park, I will leave him in the car for 10 min while I run into the store or something, with the window rolled down. I feel horrible because he cries the whole time! So I try to avoid it if I can.
