I saw that one of the fertility places I am interested in participates in some clinical trials. It got me wondering if anyone on here has participated in any (of any kind) and what your experience was like.

@travellingbee: I was in the huge AMIGOS study to conceive L. They were trying to figure out the best drugs to ensure pregnancy without multiples. That would have covered 3 cycles of IUI at no cost (we only needed 1) and every so often we have a questionnaire about how L is doing developmentally. It was a great experience.
And I just participated in a questionnaire study that is looking to measure the impact on your life, post-infertility.

I was in one for a multivalent HPV vaccine (for more HPV strains than gardisil) during grad school. It was great. I got a free HPV vaccine, and free paps (granted, way more than I ever needed, but oh well) and paid $75 for each exam. This wasn't fertility related so I'm not sure if it's helpful, but that was my experience.

I participated in a trial when I was young, got a $100 best buy gift card and thought it was the coolest thing ever, lol! I'm actually a research coordinator now and enroll people in clinical trials. I currently work in oncology, but have worked in mental health and genetics in the past.

I was in a trial at my RE's office to test using saliva instead of blood for estrogen monitoring. I just had to drool (lol) into a vial every time I got my blood drawn during my IVF cycle so they could compare the results.
I believe Jenn23 was in (or almost in) a clinical IVF trial. It's a good way to save money on IVF.

@travellingbee: I participated in a study along with my successful IVF cycle. It involved additional testing before my retrieval and right before my transfer to see if they can isolate the best uterine conditions (aside from lining thickness) for successful IVF outcomes.

@travellingbee: Nope, there was no compensation for the study at all (!) because it was just an extra test done as part of the regular retrieval and transfer processes
My clinic is affiliated with a major teaching hospital so they always have things going on. I am in a study for my pregnancy too!

I have never participated in a clinical trial, but I have worked as a nurse in clinical trials. All of the pts that were in the trials were always happy to be in them, said they were treated and compensated very well, and alot of them even did it for a living (instead of working).

@travellingbee: I would imagine that most of the clinical trials available wouldn't significantly decrease the cost of IVF. Providing free or largely discounted procedures may be seen as coercion. Meaning that people only participate in the trial because they couldn't afford the procedure by themselves. While I'm sure that some of these trials exist, I wouldn't count on that being the norm.

@kiddosc: not planning on doing one, I was just curious. The one at the fertility clinic offered free medication for the cycle and a reduced rate for the ivf.
