A squirrel. I swear it had a death wish, it just like jumped in front of my wheel. It was a horrible, horrible experience. I can't imagine if it were something bigger

I've also hit a bird or two, on the highway. (But they flew into the windshield, I didn't run "over" them.) I guess I am a menace to wildlife.

@sloaneandpuffy: I had to swerve to avoid a squirrel today. Knock on wood that we never hit anything big. So dangerous.

@Andrea: never swerve! It's not worth it!
My friend swerved because she didn't want to hit a dog.. Ended up gettin into an accident and had to have knee surgery!

@chopsuey119: very true, in certain situations you really shouldn't. Today I was the only car down a neighborhood road so there wasn't anything to hit...except for that crazy squirrel!

Oh yes, all part of living in the country growing up; racoon, birds, squirrels, and the dreaded deer.

I've come close with a few deer, but I think I've only gotten two squirrels in my driving career :(. Both times I felt awful.

I haven't ever hit anything. When I was a kid, my dad hit a dog. It was horrible.

A raccoon. But it wasn't my fault. I saw it early enough to stop. And when I thought I was in the clear, I started to drive, only to have the car go over a "bump". I'm pretty sure the raccoon got to the other side of the road, only to turn around and sit right in front of my wheel.
Also a good reason to never swerve - insurance. If you hit the animal, it goes under your comprehensive coverage. If you swerve to miss the animal and hit a tree, it's a collision claim.

@sloaneandpuffy: I swear squirrels and birds play chicken. they are content in a yard until they see a car, then book it in front of me! I've yet to hit one though.

I hit a dog once. I was SO upset. I stopped the car (half in the road) and ran up to the nearest house. People were coming out b/c they heard my brakes and tires squealing. The woman started yelling at me, "What did you DO!? How fast were you going?? YOU HIT MY DOG ON PURPOSE!" Oh my god, it was the worst experience of my life. I tried to help, we found her dog but she kept yelling at me, so I kept saying, "I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry" but she kept yelling. I felt like I was in danger for my own safety so, I just walked back to my car and cried and cried as I pulled away. It was the worst moment of my life.

@mediagirl: OMG!!!! If she had kept an eye on her dog and kept it in her yard, it wouldn't have gotten hit! You poor thing - that must have been horrible
I hit a bird with my car... When I looked in the rear view mirror, all I saw was a poof of feathers

Yes, several times. The most recent was a rabbit. Yay country roads! Haven't hit a deer or bear yet, so I count myself lucky.

A few squirrels, a raccoon, a bird and an armadillo. There's probably more, but I can't remember. I live in the country and just feel lucky I haven't taken out a deer yet.

@mediagirl: I am so sorry. That is horrible. It was smart of you to get outta there. Accidents happen, unfortunately.

I've never myself, but been in the car when my DH has. Once it was a suicidal groundhog. The worst though was a few months ago. We were driving down a busy 80 km/hr street and a cat ran out at just the wrong time, no time to slow down and know enough not to swerve! It definitely hit both front and back wheels and didn't make it we felt so sick about it.

OMG, a few years ago a giant raccoon ran across the street and the car in front me of just nicked it and it rolled right underneath my front tire. Then I felt it in the back tire. I screamed my head off. It was the WORST feeling ever.
My friend hit a deer so badly that when the tow truck came, there was deer hair and blood all over his car. *barf*

Oh I HATE hitting things in my car but being in the country in australia it will happen to everyone. I've hit birds (lots) they eat the grain that spills from trucks on the side of the road so they are common road kill I've also hit rabbits and foxes (which are pests so I don't feel so bad) I've also hit 3 kangaroos horrible experiences with every one. Poor things. I wish we ha those nature passes like I saw in the US.
