@Mamaof2: yup, it is a crap shoot though. We happened to be staying at hostel in iceland and someone came in around midnight and told us to come outside. It was late august, so early for them, they weren't as vibrant as that picture but still a cool experience.

@Mamaof2: not yet, my husband was just saying last night that we'll take the kids at 5 and 7 to finland or sweeden

@Banana330: awesome!
@jetsa: are those places suppose to be the best viewing areas?

This is a bucket list item for me too! I'd love to see the Northern Lights!

I saw them out of the window of the airplane when I flew to iceland (stopover). Would love to see them for real.

Yes and it was really really cool. We took our babymoon to Alaska in late feb/ early March, in large part to see them. We were lucky since the night before we did our excursion thing they weren't visible. It was on my bucket list (Dh wanted to heli-ski, so we both got to cross things off our lists).

I saw them once at a family camp on the Puget Sound, in about 2000. It was some very unusual solar storm, so they were visible way further south than usual. It was a once in a lifetime experience, though I hope to see them again someday.

Two friends on FB both recently went to see it and said it was amazing! Now I want to go!

Yes, many times. The first time was when I was 10 and was it amazing - the best I've seen, I hope I always remember it.

I've never been, a friend just returned with his mother (on her bucket list and she is terminal) and the pictures were incredible. It would be something I would seriously enjoy.

It's on my bucket list, too! Dying to see them one day. We'll probably won't until DS is old enough to remember and take a long trip to Alaska in hopes to see them.

Every winter. They are really pretty, but the downside is that when they come out, it is very VERY cold.

Not yet, it has been too cloudy here lately, but here is the forecast!

They're really totally awesome. I heard Iceland is a good place to catch them at some times of year. Alaska too. I was lucky to see them on a trip in Alaska, but it was late summer and we only saw them once in two weeks.

We live in Seattle and have been to Alaska. Haven't seen them yet. When we were in Alaska I looked and we had to get up at 3-4am to see them and if it was a clear sky. Someone told us it was out one day and we missed it.

We came very close to booking a babymoon trip this January for a B&B outside of Fairbanks where you can sit in your living room and look out a huge window straight at the aurora when it is showing. Sounds perfect since I hate being cold and you don't have to go outside. We didn't end up pulling the trigger but it seems like a fairly easy trip to do with a baby, so we might do it next winter. DH in particular really wants to see the aurora.

Yes, in Norway. They didn't look like that pic but still quite awesome

Once that I remember, in my backyard here in Minnesota. Not nearly as vibrant as more northern regions, but gorgeous nonetheless!

Yes, we were lucky and caught them one night in Iceland in September. It wasn't very vibrant, but still awesome.

On my bucket list too! My DH is a pilot and he sees them all the time. So not sure if I can convince him to take me!
pomelo / 5678 posts
DH saw them this morning! Green, purple, pink and orange. The moon had a rainbow all around it. He said it was really cool! Between 5:30 and 6am on his way to work.

I slept through them post-call in Seattle once. Whoops!
pomegranate / 3759 posts
Yup lots! Right outside our window. They are beautiful. Even saw them bright red one time!

@MrsBrewer: southern middle I used to see them on our farm up north and DH saw them just to the south of the city this morning.

My childhood was spent in the Canadian arctic and it was routine in the winter to see them. I then lived in Northern Alberta and could never see them there--I think that they aren't as vibrant and what I was expecting was never what was in the sky

I live in central Alberta and we see them a few times a winter here. Definitely not as intense as that picture though!

I saw them in Virginia once!! I was a kid and I remember it was on the news that there was a chance we might see them. The sky just kind of glowed red in parts.
@Greentea: I saw a rainbow around the moon once camping as a kid. Never seen anything like it again!

No, and I'm still bitter about it. It's such a crap shoot. I was in Fairbanks in January and we even went further out of the city a few nights hoping it would happen. Nothing.

@Greentea: oh wow that's awesome!! I'm in the city (Milw) so probably way too bright here to ever see them!

I saw them once (from super afar!) in Virginia. I had to call my dad to the window to verify that's what it was (it was a rare super south occurrence) and that something in the distance wasn't majorly on fire!
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
Nope. I wish! That would be amazing. Hopefully something I will get to experience in life.

Yup! Once from our house in Northern Michigan. Not nearly the vibrancy in the most northern regions, but still amazing.
