I worked at Williams Sonoma about six years ago during the holiday season. I went after my FT job and worked a few hours 3-4x a week.....it was fun and I loved the discount!

Never retail... I worked at Tim Hortons, Subway and as a waitress at a restaurant before getting in to my career.

I worked for J.Crew, but it wasn't typical retail. I worked at the call center doing customer service then a bridal "personal shopper and client specialist". I hated it - people are bold on the phone.

I worked at Walgreens in high school! I loooved it! and I got a 15% discount!

I worked at Filene's during the holiday season in high school one year. All I did was fold clothes and I haaated it.

I worked at TJ Maxx for a year. We got a lame 10% discount and free layaway. But, the best part was taking in inventory from the truck. I always picked the best stuff right away....I gave them back most of my paycheck, but I was well dressed!

I used to always help out at my aunt's Harry & David store while I was in college. It was my duty to know what EVERYTHING tasted like so I could accurately describe it to customers. I took my responsibilities very seriously

I worked at Bath & Body Works for a year. I loved it! Everyone got along great. I'd probably still be working there a couple days a week if they hadn't closed our location. There was a disagreement about the price of the rent.

I worked at J. Crew during college and when I first moved to Boston. The discount was OK but I spent way too much $. If I ever have to work retail again I'm going to choose something w/no folding.

I worked at Victoria's Secret... 6 years later and I'm still scarred from it! We got a decent discount, and great freebies. However, I am NOT cut out for retail.

I worked at The Gap in high school, a small accessories store in college, and at Alfred Angelo while I was a SAHM (on nights and weekends).
I never made any money at The Gap because I used my discount all the time!
The accessories store was fun but again, I used my discount way too much.
Alfred Angelo... I was really good at upselling accessories (I was known for selling "the bridal look" instead of just a dress) but it was really hard. Physically exhausting to drag around wedding dresses nonstop! I lost a lot of weight and got really toned! There is actually an Undercover Boss for Alfred Angelo tomorrow night... my ex coworkers (none of us work there anymore, haha) and I are all psyched!

@mrs. wagon: Working in bridal must be hard!!!

@mrs. wagon: Ooooh, I think I will have to watch that one. I love Undercover Boss and that one seems intersting!

@autumnlove: I think I actually got lucky with all my brides-- never had a bridezilla. I think the type of people who shop at Alfred Angelo are less prone to bridezilla tendencies Very down to earth and just looking for a good deal on a nice looking dress. I concentrated on making everyone look as skinny or as booby as possible!
I once had a bride who wanted to be just BLINGGED out. I put every accessory on her that was coated in bling... rhinestone lined veil, blingy tiara (worn as a headband), blingy hair comb in her bun, blingy statement necklace, blingy chandelier earrings, blingy cuff bangle, super blingy shoes, and of course blingy dress. She bought every single piece!! She was one of my favorite brides!

So many retail jobs! Starting at age 14 as soon as I could get my worker's permit!
Stores/stands in the mall that are not national chains, a video game store, a local cooking/gourmet food store, Kohl's, and Borders (that was the BEST). Probably a few others I'm forgetting. Borders was awesome because I was hired before it was built and got to be a part of the store being put together, it was really cool. And you could check out books anytime and the discount was great too. I also did storytime for kids, and was in charge of the 'paperchase' section (stationary, toys, etc.)
@mrswagon: ooooh I love undercover boss AND I love all the wedding dress shows so I need to tune in to that!
@swurlygurl: I got hired at VS but then backed out. They were too intense!

@cmomma17: Seriously! And the other girls were kind of mean/rude. Plus, we HAD to wear a suit coat AND heels. Ugh, so many blisters.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@swurlygurl: they had me do a test run where I pressured some poor guy into getting a credit card. they were all about the credit card push. I couldn't handle that, and I wasn't excited about the 90% black dress code. I don't think I had any black clothes at the time!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@cmomma17: Oh yeah, the credit cards! That's the worst. It's not like you can actually force customers to sign up for them.

I worked at a Goodys just as a seasonal part time thing. I wasn't much good at sales. They wanted us to push credit cards and deals on people and I just couldn't. I didn't want to push these things on people because they weren't necessarily a good thing. Hidden fees and contracts and such...i didn't feel right doing it. Lol
Overall it wasn't so bad but I will never do retail again as long as I have a choice.
There was (and still is) this thing where if you pay with a credit card you had a special offer of 3 magazine subscriptions for 3 months. If you don't cancel they charge you a buttload to renew them. It's also almost impossible to cancel the subscription. If you dialed the automated line it literally gave you no option. You had to press 0 over and over at least 20 times before it would let you speak to a real person.
If you are ever offered this at a store, DO NOT accept it. It's a legit scam.

I worked at Fossil during college and LOVED it. I really enjoyed retail! I also worked in a small, locally owned boutique/jewelry store during high school and had a lot of fun with that.

I worked at Express for a semester and loathed it. I needed a job ASAP because I had lost my clothes and things to Katrina, so I took the first one I could get. I was a great salesperson but sucked at selling the credit cards, which was apparently all that mattered.
I also hated having to wear heels and dress up to the 9s every day to work! Just wasn't me!

I worked at lululemon for the year I took off between undergrad and grad school. I loved it! The 50% discount was pretty awesome too.

@heartonastring: I would love to work there!

I worked at Sephora and the Gap during college. Loved Sephora - I had such an awesome makeup collection by the end of my stint there!

I worked at Victoria's Secret while in college for a couple months - absolutely horrible. Rearranging panties ALL day long and pushing credit cards gets old fast. The only pro was getting the bra's and perfume heavily discounted when they introduced new ones!

I LOVE working retail. I miss it so much, especially during the holidays. I would still work a part time retail job if I could.
I worked at Victoria's Secret for 7 years and the Gap for a short while.
My dream is to retire and take on a twice a week retail job at Nordstrom or Bloomingdales and be the old lady that works until my last day.
My 90 year old great-aunt does and says it keeps her young!

@Littlebit: Ugh... those stupid underwear... and then the teen girls that would come in and trash a display seconds after you finished it... :'(

I have never work in retail, but have always been tempted because of the employee discount.

I worked at the Gap for a few years from high school to college. Before that, I bussed tables and waitressed (very briefly, wasn't good at it).

I worked in a pet store, at a grocery store and in CS at a large chain furniture store. I hate retail with a fiery passion!

Yup! I worked at Ann Taylor and AT LOFT for awhile, I was a lead at LOFT and helped open a new store. I love the company's commitment to customer service, I still shop there often! The particular manager I had though was too concerned about numbers and reaching number goals instead of providing stellar service so that is what ultimately made me leave.
It actually wasn't bad working holidays - it was nice and busy! I made great money working Black Friday

I worked at CVS for almost 5 years and loved it there. DH jokes that I missed my calling as a pharmacist...

I worked at Walgreens for a couple of years while in college then worked at Macy's for about a month until I found my current position. Walgreens was ok. But I absolutely hated working at Macy's. I quit w/o giving a notice and they said I can never work there again. Fine by me!
@MrsBrewer: Another walgreens worker here! But I wouldn't say I loved it. It was better once I got off working the front register and then worked in cosmetics.
coconut / 8854 posts
@mrskc: I loved the front register! lol I'm a dork. I loved being busy. Plus I didn't know much about cosmetics, so whenever anyone would ask me questions....I would just stand there...like uhhh.......hahaha

I worked at American Eagle during the holiday season in college. I didn't like it, but the discount helped with buying presents that year.
