I saw a new dentist today (new to me) and he told me my teeth are in good shape but I need 7 fillings/repairs done ASAP. It completely surprised me because I'm not in pain and my previous dentist who I saw every 6 months only did 1 repair in 6 years.
I want a second opinion but it may cost more money to get that than to have all this dental work.
Has anyone been through this before? Did pregnancy make you more prone to dental problems?

My dad's a dentist, so I haven't done the second opinion thing, but yes, my teeth were horrible after pregnancy and nursing and an MSPI elimination diet (I didn't supplement with calcium, which I now regret). I think I was about 6 months post-partum when I found out that I had 8 cavities. Ugh. I had no pain or really any indication of issues either.

I have not and have wondered if I should have. So that's not very helpful. But for 8 fillings I think it might be worth checking with another dentist first.

Not for myself, or with a dentist! But we have sought second opinions for LO with a few medical situations and I don't regret it.

A second opinion shouldn't be too costly. Most insurances will pay for a comprehensive exam at another providers office I think. It's 1 per lifetime per provider. Ask your dentist for copies of the X-rays that they took and you may not have to retake those. Also, usually you can code X-rays a different way and the insurance will likely cover it if they need a few more or a different angle. All this also depends on your insurance plan obviously.
I have had patients seeking second opinions before and that is what I usually do to keep their costs down.

@yellowbird: thank you for the recommendations! They took a bunch of X-rays and photos today - I'll try to get copies and also follow up with my insurance to see if they may allow another exam.

but that many fillings seems like a lot! I would definitely get another opinion.

@autumnleaves: It might be a postpartum issue. With my first, I broke a filling and needed a repair. With my second, I got a root canal. I would definitely get a second opinion because 8 cavities and fillings seems like a lot. Do you have dental insurance? It'll cover an exam and fillings up until a certain point.

Pregnancy definitely impacts your teeth a lot! That's why many insurances will pay for an additional cleaning while pregnant.
That sucks if you suddenly need 7 fillings/repairs though.

@Adira: they do? I should call my dental insurance company. My dentist wanted to see me again in 4 months, so my Nov visit will be my 3rd visit for the year and they said that I had to pay out of pocket.
