@Rubies: Anyone who watches The Daily Show will know who he is. *face palm*

I know who he is but I don't understand how he is still the mayor! I have heard from friends that he has no shame and won't be resigning. Can anyone (city council?) throw him out of office though? He admitted to committing a crime!

I'm curious too. I saw bits on the Daily show and Jimmy Kimmel, and was like... oh man, this is BAD if the Americans are paying attention to us.

But, I find it pretty entertaining. I'm in Vancouver. Our Mayor wants everybody to ride their bike everywhere and eat organic, and on the other side of the country theirs is smoking crack!?

From what I understand the only way to remove him from office is for him to resign himself. I thought there must be some way to do a vote of non-confidence or something, but I guess not??

yeah I saw it...and the fact that he wants to see the video to see just how wasted he was shows his character and his alcoholism. I've had one too many plenty of times in my life, but never enough to say "sure pass me the crack."

He may not have a drug problem (although what is a guy like that doing at a party that would have that kind of drug floating around) but he for sure has a drinking problem!

@Mrs. High Heels: When he ran last time he was up against an openly gay candidate. Although some parts of Toronto are super liberal and accepting of diverse lifestyles, a HUGE portion of the city of very conservative. It was well known that he was/is an alcoholic during his run for Mayor, and he has been ejected from many a formal event and sports event for public drunkenness and aggression. Still, he won decisively, and despite all the scandal since he's been in office he will probably win again.

When I lived in Toronto we had an AMAZING mayor who didn't last his term because he met so much opposition to his "radical" ideas (more bike lanes, increased public spending on fixing up housing commissions, etc).

Toronto is definitely a city of contrasts. A place I love but I'm quite happy I don't live there anymore.

@ScarletBegonia: @Mrs. High Heels: Another thing to add is that people bought his whole "i'm just like one of you" shtick and talk about cutting fat in city hall and ending the "gravy train". He appealed to a lot of conservatives and surrounding suburban communities.

I listen to NPR a lot at work and this was basically the top story yesterday. I loved the audible gasp from the reporter holding the microphone when he said "yes, I've smoked crack cocaine..."

I've never been happier to not be a voter (I'm a resident, not a citizen). I feel like making a tee shirt that says "he's not my fault!"
What a scumbag.

I'm just north of Toronto, so yeah. What a mess. I never liked his character.

@Rubies: You should be very embarrassed. I've heard of him a lot and I think anyone who reads Gawker regularly would know him. He's been making the news in NY for a while!
