We are at the point where we need to redo our roof unfortunately. 
When we bought it, the home inspector commented that the roof was nearing the end of its useful life, and then we recently had a skylight leak. This might not be so frustrating if we hadn't just paid for IVF too!
I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the options. I know I want something that looks dark grey but not totally black. How did you choose a new roof?

We purchased our house knowing that we would have to purchase a new roof. It was pricey but well worth it. We no longer have to worry about possible leaks with our old house. I think we went with a dark gray color, which is similar to what was on there before. It looked the best from all the samples we were shown.

We are prohibited by the historic district, so our options are somewhat limited... But in the house we just bought there is a 50 year grey composite roof with small cut panels. It looks really nice!

@spaniellove: Not exactly. It's those small cut pieces. They call it a laminated architectural shingle. It's really pretty.

Edited to add: I guess some people get it because it is designed to look a little like slate

We love it. I like the charcoal best because I think it looks more sophisticated, but that's just me
I think it's a good option. We got the 50 year one, so hopefully we never have to re-roof. Both our other houses were in need of re-roofing when we sold them. Luckily, the buyers didn't balk because of it!

@Mrs. Jacks: They gave us a list of homes in our area that had certain colors so we're going to go look tomorrow. I think the charcoal could look really good because we have a very structured, traditional thing going on with boxwoods and the lion knocker!

@spaniellove: my husband is a roofer and he always uses Owens Corning Duration Dimensional shingles.

The kind that look like slate are called dimensional. The ones that look more like staggered rectangle tiles are called three tabs and he NEVER puts those on, no matter the brand.

@JamieLee: OMG yes...we're replacing builder grade three tab shingles and I never realized until today how hideous our roof looks!

@spaniellove: haha! He HATES them! He did put them on once after trying to talk the guy out of them to no avail! He actually charged more for labor because they're harder to put on even though they look terrible!

@Mrs. Jacks: Thank you again for your recommendation - we ended up choosing Appalachian Sky (very close to Charcoal) and are getting the lifetime warranty!
