Never mind starbucks-cup-gate, the UK is currently in uproar to discover that Americans haven't heard of the Sausage Roll.
Have you heard of it (its a sausage in pastry, basically)?

I've heard of them (Pinterest), but never had one! I have made sausage bread before though.

No, but I need one. That post is hilarious.
Also, I need a meat pie.
I love all things meat in pastry.

@mediagirl: Yes! Steak and kidney pie chippy chips and gravy!
@MRSJX3: I just googled sausage bread. Mmm! Its like a sausage calzone!

I haven't heard of them, but my neighbors growing up would mix spicy breakfast sausage with cream cheese and wrap in it crescent rolls. They called them sausage rolls, but I don't think they are the same! Delicious though!

The closest thing I've had to that is a hot dog baked in a crescent roll!!

Nope never had them, sound similar to a Runza without the cabbage (this is a Midwest thing so I'm not even sure other areas of US know of them haha)

I've made them twice at the suggestion of my old roommate. They are so good.

Here in western Canada, I certainly know what they are and enjoy them as a treat. Yummy!

Lol, I never thought about that but it's true, before moving to England, I'd never heard of a sausage roll! Now, of course, I'm a convert and LOVE them, but I'd forgotten they're not a thing at all in the States!

I've certainly had them here in Canada! Appetizer size though. But so yummy!

Uh, no, but now I desperately want one in my mouth like, yesterday!

This is cracking me up.
Guys, you are missing out!!! Eat them warm, so flaky and delicious!

I think I have – at our favroite Irish pub they have sausage in pastry for an app but it’s bite sized more than like, a log. So, don’t know if that counts!
Looks like they are a similar idea to pigs in a blanket, which should be made with sausage and not the blasphemous hot dogs some people here use.

@Cherrybee: The U.S. has their own regional versions that are different but similar (probably from various immigrant communities). West Virginia is famous for their "pepperoni rolls". And Texas is obsessed with "kolaches" which is a bastardization (and not even the correct Czech word) for a type of pastry that can be either sweet or savory. The savory ones have sausages on the inside. They are so popular and ubiquitous in Texas now that every donut store sells them and every place does their own version with different breads or different sausages on the inside.
And now, Kolache places are opening all over Brooklyn, too!

ETA: in Texas, they are equally popular for breakfast,, lunch, snacks, and dinner. It's honestly one of the things I miss most about living in New Jersey now.

I'm in Canada and yes these are definitely a thing here!!! We usually have them as part of our heavy appetizer Christmas eve dinner Omg so good!

What about pigs in a blanket?
Also, I totally have herd of them (and probably ate at least one a day as a kid) but I grew up in Malaysia, which is a former british colony so maybe that makes a difference???
I recently had a discussion with my husband about a meat pasty and whether he knew what that was. When I explained it he said it sounded like an empanada, so I feel like these kinds of pastry wrapped meats are all over and just have regional names. But I love food history.

And wait---All Americans have had Pig-in-a-blanket, too! And that's super similar. Just our own version of a sausage roll.

@Anagram: Mmmmm... kolaches. We're flying to Texas tomorrow and kolaches are on the list of must acquire on our trip.

My parents are from the UK. We always ate sausage rolls when we went to visit our grandparents. They usually got the mini ones. Pigs in a blanket are good, but not the same as a sausage roll!
ETA and now I want one!

@kiddosc: where are you going in Texas? I miss kolaches so much! I just like the cheap, texas-ified versions with sausage, cheese, and jalapenos wrapped in flaky pastry dough.

@Anagram: I had something like that picture in Chinatown for breakfast! It was hot dog in a pastry.

@Anagram: We're going to be in the Dallas area visiting family. We lived outside of Houston for 6 years and just moved to Wisconsin the summer of 2014. DH has a whole list of food he wants to eat on the trip.

It blows my mind that these aren't a thing in the US! I'm in Canada and have always had these, plus my husband is British and is addicted to them.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
I grew up in the UK, so obviously, yes. But I currently live in Texas and we have kolaches all the time.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
Never heard of them. I assumed they would be like pigs in a blanket but it sounds like the British version is ground sausage, not a sausage link. And the outside is more like puff pastry than a crescent roll. Not going to lie, this does not appetize me.

@Cherrybee: the outrage hit the news in NZ too! Love leftover cold sausage rolls...

I had a few in Germany last year. But they sold various savory rolls at my local Paris Baguette when I lived in South Korea.

This has been on the news here in Australia - its not a sausage wrapped in anything. Its minced meat formed into a log and baked in flaky puff pastry. You smother the thing in ketchup and burn the insides of your mouth eating it scorching hot.

@FannyMae: Ha it was news here in New Zealand too. Now I really want one!
persimmon / 1461 posts
@MrsStar: There's always the local servo for the desperate sausage roll/hot pie emergency. I don't think I've actually eaten a sausage roll since high shool, it was always our after school snack!
persimmon / 1043 posts
I've tried the Australian kind (?) since there's a franchise by my work. Not a huge fan, though...
pomelo / 5257 posts
@Anagram: kolaches were my first thought, too, which I'd never even heard of before moving to Texas
