Wow we used it all weekend on our road trip and it was AMAZING!
We don't use the car much so have been waiting for a chance to use it. My mind has been blown... I feel like I was just living in the future!
Have you used Waze? How do you like it?

Yes! I love it! I found it when my GPS broke down and I needing something ASAP. I haven't bought a new GPS because it is ah-maz-ing.

I love it for road trips. I can't use it and drive though....so I only use when SO is driving

@sloaneandpuffy: We bought a car charger for the iPhone... it was ~$30 and made our road trip so much more enjoyable!

It's wicked cool. It does the drain the battery so I use it sparingly.

Yes, I love it! It saved us from being stuck in traffic for half an hour yesterday, and tipped us off to a speed trap!
ETA: It is a huge battery drain, so I make sure my phone's on the car charger.

I have no idea what it is but will definitely be looking into it if its so amazing?!

It's a great app! Recently purchased by Google, so Google must've viewed them as a strong competitor to Google Maps!

We have built in GPS so we've never tried it. Is it a lot better than GPS?
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@Andrea: The social aspect of it is great. When there are tons of reports from other users telling me there's heavy traffic up ahead I can reroute. And sometimes it will take into account the average speed of other uses and will automatically reroute you itself if it calculates a faster route. Plus the other uses can tell you about things like accidents or hidden (or visible) speed traps.

@Andrea: If you're driving with the app on, it uses your driving speed to help determine how traffic is moving... then uses everyone's collective speed (and other info they report) to help you find the fastest route!
It's pretty incredible to see the maps with other drivers on them, and to know ahead of time where all of the traffic jams will be!

I love love love Waze! It is the only GPS app I use on my phone. I got to be gold on it once on a long road trip, but unfortunately that didn't last long.

@MrsScallop: Oooh, is that like Ms. Pacman where you can eat all the ghosts after eating a power pellet?

@mrbee: haha, I wish! I just got a fancy gold character on the map because I had gotten the high score for my area after driving through 24 states in a month. I think I have been stuck at the knight level ever since.

I used it a couple years ago on a road trip. I liked warning other drivers about cops!

We used it when we were in California during carmagedden or whatever they were calling it and we loved it! We tried to use it at home but not enough people here were using it so it wasn't as good. This reminds me to try it again though!

@JerricaBenton: haha, I used it at the same time. I was so happy that carmaggedon scared so many people off the roads. It could have been really bad!

@FutureMrsMcK: @mrbee: neat! Good to know, thanks!
grapefruit / 4006 posts
yup, we use it when we know traffic is going to be bad. so we'll look up our route on google maps, see how much red there is and then go to waze if there is a lot. it once took us on this crazy route so we could avoid bad traffic on the LI Expressway, and it was amazing! we sped home in no time.

Yeah, I have been using it daily for at least a year now. I like it a lot but like some others mentioned, it drains your battery. Even if I have it plugged in, I find it doesn't charge as fast if I'm using it. I love the police notifications but get annoyed with all of the little notifications.

@LaineysMom: haha yes, luckily it didn't turn out that badly! But the news told us to download waze so we did!

Finally used it this weekend for a road trip.
I love that I can have it speak through my Bluetooth in my car.
The one thing I don't get is that you can really only use it (to its full advantage and safely) if you are a passenger.
My DH did all of the driving this weekend so I was scoping out the reports and making reports.
Do you guys use it when you are alone in the car? I leave the app open so I get alerts but I try to keep my phone in the cup holder.
Maybe I should find something to hold my iPhone on the windshield. Though, I might be tempted to use it while driving, which is bad.
ETA- Oh, cool. I found out that there's a setting in Waze for voice commands. http://gigaom.com/2012/02/09/waze-adds-hands-free-option-for-traffic-reporting-navigation/

@bluestriped bee: Yah the voice commands are really cool! They've really focused lately on preventing "distracted driving"... the voice commands and voice features are really powerful in their latest versions!

I am now in love with the app. Yesterday, I had to get to my accupunture appointment. If I had taken my usual route, it would have taken me 40 minutes. Instead I saw Waze suggested a weird route. I almost ignored it but decided to try it. It took 20 minutes! This was at 5:30p during rush hour and in downtown Seattle traffic! Simply amazing!!! The routes they suggested had little to no traffic!
I downloaded the app about a month ago but haven't really used it. This past weekend we went on a road trip and I used it to report stuff.
I used it everyday this week so I could get more points. It has definitely paid off.
I bought a new Garmin for Christmas that has lifetime maps and traffic alerts. This is so so much better than my Garmin.
I just purchased an iPhone car mount so I can have my phone safely secured when I drive. Can't wait to use it!

I love it! I use it every single day that I'm driving to the train for work. Gives me different routes based on traffic patterns and remembers my favorite routes and suggests them first if traffic is similar! Love, love love!

@bluestriped bee: awesome!!! Do you have a car charger too? It really draws down the battery otherwise!!

I just downloaded the app! I wish I had paid attention to this thread when it was first started - we went on a 6 hr road trip last weekend!

Waze cut DH's commute at night from 1.5 hours to 50 minutes. Love it!

@mrbee: my husband swears by this app! It's always on when we drive.

DH and I have started using it and I've found it helpful but only if you have the physical address. Whenever I've tried putting in a place or general area it doesn't work so great.
