Yup. I worked at a burger shack for my first job in high school. I feel that if everybody had to work in food services for at least a month or two, people would be so much nicer!

I didn't mind but I wouldn't do it again

I did work at Taco Bell a long time ago. I always hear people talk about how dirty and gross fast food restaurants are, but the one I worked at was clean! I had no problem eating there, I never saw anything gross.
But the customers, yes. SO rude. I got a lot of awful older people and disgusting teen boys, and a few of every other age as well.

I worked at Subway, CiCi's Pizza, and an ice cream parlor.

My first official job was bussing tables at a ski lodge. People were so rude, and even worse they were rich and entitled!! It did have good perks, though, like free ski passes.

I started working at a local pizza place at 15; by the time I was 18 I managed it on the weekends and did payroll for the company.
I think everyone, regardless of income, should have to work either a food service or retail job for at least 6 months.

Do you have any horror stories about customers? (this isn't threadjacking, right?)
I had these baseball players that used to constantly come in and cause problems. They were so full of themselves, would hit on every girl in the place, just really annoying.
One time the ringleader was ordering tacos, and I asked "soft or hard?" referring to the shell. He goes "What do you think baby?" and grabs his crotch and starts thrusting at me.
I didn't even have time to think, but what came out was "Oh ok! I can have some teeny tiny mini tacos made especially for you."
Silence. Heh. He didn't say another word.

Not really. I worked at Barnes and Noble and every now and then I would work the register at the cafe but I never made the drinks or anything.

I worked at my parent's restaurant for as long as I can remember. Customers are rude and inconsiderate but there are a few customers who are super nice. I didn't have much of a social life in high school because I was required to work and help out everyday. Not fun at all.

I worked at Panago when I was in highschool. I was a "phone girl" which basically means I answered the phones and took orders.
People were mostly pretty nice to me actually. Whenever I got a rude customer or someone got angry with me for some reason I would just pass the call off to my manager.

@Arden: haha good for you! What a creep.
I worked at a local pizza place for a few summers

I was going to start this same thread today!
I was a waitress all through college. I think everyone should do it just to understand the crap they put up with. LOL!

I worked many a concession stand in high school and college. I worked at a sub shop in high school and a coffee shop in college, too.

I was the hostess at a five-star restaurant in college. It was the best job ever. I still think that it was one of my formative work experiences. I learned to give people bad news (no - you're table isn't ready and won't be for another hour) with a smile and I learned to be exceptionally organized in a very busy and demanding situation. It has helped me in my professional career immensely.
And the food was amazing....and there were tons of cute waiters.

@Arden: ew! Nasty boys!!
I worked 1 day at Gregg's but the woman training me (& rest of waitstaff) were so rude/bitchy that I quit.
It's always been retail for me!

I started working at a cafe when I was 13, getting paid under the table to wash dishes. I ended working there cooking and waitressing on weekends/summers until I was 21. It was a small business and we all became family. I could always come home for a weekend during college and make a bunch of money waitressing.
I think everyone would be a lot nicer and a lot better of a tipper if they had to work in food service for a while.

I worked in a retirement home starting at 16 and would be there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I really liked the old folks though the job was pretty intense.
Then I worked as a waitress in a steak house. The job was fairly easy but there was a surprising amount of grumpy people who went out to dinner and even though most people were nice, the grumps would really ruin the day. Also the people I worked with kinda sucked, lots of drugs and people doing each other and then getting mad at each other because they had done that person last week - super gross.

I waited tables at an Applebees type restaurant in high school and college. I made a crapload of money and it was awesome! I was able to save for school and not have to work during the year at all. I quickly learned that old people tend to be cheap when it comes to tipping
I totally agree that everyone should work in the industry, though. Some people were total jerks.

Oh I also worked at a golf course selling drinks out of a golf cart. I got to drive around the golf course all day. It was an awesome job. We also would host events there, great money for not hard work. The old rich guys would hit on you but in a much more 'classy' way then the guys at the steakhouse.

Chick-Fil-a, I loved it but could not stand my boss. I got free food every shift
Ususally people were nice but I had one guy who worked at a kiosk in the mall come over and get "ice ice ice water" everyday meaning a cup of ice with a teensy bit of water. The first time I made it for him I went to put the lid on it, and he grabbed my wrist and growled "I said ICE.ICE.ICE. water" ...apparently I only made ice ice water. I had another customer call me stupid one time.
Other than that, everyone was usually nice. The nicer you are to them, the nicer people are!

I worked at a bagel shop in high school, and I loved it. It was early mornings (I had to be there by 6, I think) but I was out by 2. The owners were the nicest people in the world. Most of our customers were local people coming in with their families for breakfast, so I knew a lot of them. They were usually pretty nice.
In college I was a hostess at Cracker Barrel and I hated it. The waitresses were so mean, and the customers were so rude and impatient.

My friend's parents opened a smoothie cart the summer after our 8th grade year. We worked it ALL through high school. It was actually great because they were in all of the sporting arenas/events, all of the concerts, etc. We also had a tip jar...that was pretty neat...

I worked at Panera when I was in school. I loved the food discount/sometimes free food but customers could be kind of evil. Can't think of any one anecdote in particular!

I worked as a hostess at two different restaurants in high school. One Valentines day I was running the hostess station and of course we were overflowing and had a huge wait (like an hour and a half or something ridiculous). A lot of families go out to dinner on Valentines day - like huge parties - and there was this little boy that was about 8 or so that made me cry. I had a complete breakdown; it was horrible. He was a brat LOL
Another time I called an old man 'sir' and he reamed me a new one! I was like what the hell am I supposed to call you?! I'm 16 and you're like 80 so would you rather me call you dude?
