There was some interest in an online book club on the other thread, so I thought I'd start a new thread here! I'm not too familiar with how book clubs work so someone enlighten me! We could have it start in October so we have time to get the book. How long should we get to read it? What else do we need to know?

I'll be interested! But the only time I have to read is the 10 minute train ride to and from work. And preferably one I can get from the library in ebook version.
I think picking a book once a month and then we can either have a ongoing conversation. OR we can take how many chapters the book has and split it into how many weeks in the month and reconvene once weekly for a discussion?

I'm in!!! I started one on WB a couple of years ago and really enjoyed reading the books. Unfortunately the participation in the actual discussions didn't really go anywhere but I think that it would be a lot more active here!
I think picking a book a month to discuss would be good. We could always have an open discussion thread...

Maybe whomever is leading that month gets to choose 3-4 books and we open it to a poll from there?

What type of books does everyone like? Or Authors? It's going to be most fun if we can all at least semi enjoy what we are reading. I like novels and YA, but I'm open to more!

So should we discuss once a month or once a week? Maybe we can start a book in the beginning of the month and then discuss at the end? Then start a new one the next month? Sometimes I don't get a lot of time to read so I may not be caught up by the end of each week but I could always join in discussions later

I only ask no depressing books but besides that I'm totally open. I think that's what's fun about a different person leading every month. It'll open us up to more authors!
@bao: you should lead October since you started.
So pick 3-4 and we should all vote!
I think if we did once a month people will forget. So what if we discussed weekly. And each week will be X pages or chapters. Then the leader can pose a question each week pertaining to those chapters/pages? Or twice a week (oops I meant twice a month!)?
And everyone participating that month should subscribe to the thread!

Someone else pleeeease choose some books and lead! I'm clueless about book clubs and want this off to a good start lol. I don't work well under pressure so of someone can do it this time I will start thinking if ideas for the future.

@Bao: I think it would be posting the poll to choose a book and then posting the discussion questions every week (or twice monthly if that's what is decided). For most books you can just google "Book title discussion questions" and find some pretty easily! Once the book is chosen (from the poll) we can all discuss and decide together how it should be divided (how many chapters per week/every 2 weeks, etc).

I will jump in and say that I'm interested too, but I would have no idea how to lead a book club! I would come along for the ride and I would discuss the book though!

I love to read, so I'd definitely be interested. Personally, I really enjoy memoirs, and ethnographies, so my taste may be a little far fetched. I do love a good coming of age story, too! I don't mind depressing/shocking reads, but also don't tend to dig super fluffy chick lit (i.e. Nicholas Sparks).

I like the idea of a book club.
I'd also prefer if the books could be e-books that we could get from the library. But I'm open to purchasing books.
How far in advance would we pick the book? Like middle of the month before so we have time to get it?
I like the idea of weekly discussions, even if you are behind then you can join in the discussion when you are ready.

@ALV91711: I think mid month prior is good bc that's a pretty average wait for the library if it's not a super popular new release.
And ebooks are cheaper to buy too!

I'd be interested! I tend to read mostly nonfiction on my own, so I'd like to read other things -- historical/literary fiction, YA (but no zombies or vampires for me, haha), whatever else sounds good to people. I can't imagine there would be a huge following for books on the history of salt or the development of the longitude system, but if I'm wrong let me know and I'll totally chat about such books!
