My LO is 7.5 months old and she's never really had bad diaper rash. In the past, if she looked a little red we would put the Burt's Bees ointment on and all would be well. Well, this time she has had a really bad case for about a week. We switched to A&D ointment for something stronger and when that did nothing we tried Triple Paste. We just started Triple Paste yesterday and it seems to be helping a little, but I wish it would hurry up! Is there anything more I can do, aside from letting her have diaper-free time and using the Triple Paste religiously?

We also used triple paste and gave LO diaper free time when she had bad rashes. I hope it clears up soon!

Baking soda baths! When my LO had a bad diaper rash it was the combo of baking soda in her bath and a product with zinc oxide (which I think Triple Paste has) that got rid of it. And we didn't use baby wipes when she had diaper rash, just washcloths and water.
ETA: We use Aveeno Soothing Care Diaper Rash Cream.

The only thing that worked on a bad diaper rash LO got from too many prunes was Desitin Extra Strength (purple tube). Cleared up within a day or so.

wash cloth and water, and then making sure her butt is 100% dry before putting on the diaper cream. I didnt havemuchluck with triple paste, desitin extra works best for us too although its messy.

@mrsjazz: Oh, I have never heard of a baking soda bath. Interesting! I'll def give it a try.
This also confirms that I need to start using just water when I'm changing her. I've been too lazy to do that, but I think it's time.

Could it be a yeast rash?? My LO had this and it looked terrible! They make OTC antifungals but the best is nystatin which is rx only. Is the rash bumpy?

Soak in a warm bath for 10 minutes, 3 times a day, if the skin is very raw. For babies and young children, add 2 Tbsp (30 mL) of baking soda to a baby tub, a basin of warm water, or a bathtub. Remember, do not bathe a baby until the umbilical cord has fallen off, and never leave a child alone while he or she is in the bath.

@meredithNYC: My ped told me to mix equal parts Neosporin, Lotrimin, any diaper rash cream, and Hydrocortisone 0.5%. Mix it all up and apply twice a day. It cleared up my son's really bad diaper rash in just a few days. Two of my friends tried this and it worked really well for them too!

I do a little bacitracin and white rash cream and it usually clears up!

I always dried my son's bottom really well before putting any creams or diapers back on regardless of rash but when we did get a really stubborn rash, Dr. Smith's was what worked best for us.

@meredithNYC: Are you sure it's diaper rash and not a yeast infection?
What I thought was diaper rash for DD actually ended up being a yeast infection and the doctor had us get some Lotramin (athlete's foot cream) and put that on 3x a day, and cover it with a thick diaper cream like triple paste.

I would definitely look into if it is a yeast rash, if it is, the only thing that will help is hydrocortisone and anti-fungals. You can mix stuff up yourself, but your doctor can prescribe something a bit heavier duty that you could mix yourself, so it will work better. Also they usually give you so much you can use it if she gets a yeast rash again in the future (we got a Rx cream at 2 weeks old, and still have some left at 9 months).

DD would whine if we sat her down anywhere because it was so sore. But after putting the Lotramin on, we saw an immediate change, and it cleared up in about 3 days.

I blow dried between changes when he had a bad rash as a newborn. Water for wiping diaper free time and triple paste vleared it for us. Hope it heals soon!

Thanks, all! We're headed to the doctor in an hour to have this checked out. I would feel terrible if I'm treating her for diaper rash when she has an infection, so I figure I'd better find out what is for sure. And of course I put her down for a nap so she would be well rested for her appointment and I can hear her babbling/kicking the bars of her crib - lol. Great!

Air it out as much as possible - I let my son sleep overnight without a diaper and it helped - just put a waterproof mat down, he never pooped at night so I didn't have to worry about him pooping. -
I definitely wouldn't put antibacterial a on it u til you know it's not a yeast rash. It will oy make it worse! Yeast rashes are characteristically bumpy and red! You can get the OTC stuff if you can't make it to your ped right away! My LOs cleared up in a day or two on the cream 4X a day. Ped recommended using it for a week.
