Oooh that is tough. Do you have a small area you could set aside for a small area maybe for your toddler?

Not sure about your exact situation, but what my parents did was they put my brother and me in the one bedroom and they slept on a pull-out couch in the living room when they were in a one-bedroom apartment. Would that be an option?

I would suggest seeing how you could make space for your toddler in the living room (or anywhere you have space to create a little nook). Since you are pregnant, you have time to work with DS on sleep and getting used to the new area. I'd probably set him up in a small nook outside of the bedroom since the baby will keep him up in the beginning. There are cute ways you can separate the space. Check Apartment Therapy, they have awesome solutions for small spaces (I'm on that site all the time!)

Or you can all sleep in the same room if DS ends up not moving. It may be the best thing for your family (OR NOT!)

I have seen some cool shared rooms in tiny spaces like NYC apts on Project Nursery. I saw one yesterday with a shared space for 3 kids! We have a 2/2 and DD will be in our room in the porta crib and DS will stay in his crib in his room. The goal is after a year to move them into a shared room in DS's room.

Do you have a 1 or 2 bed? I was freaking out at first too, but after looking on Pinterest and project nursery it's totally doable.

My friend was in this situation (her sons are 18 months apart). At first, they continued to have the toddler sleep with them in their room (they had an IKEA crib in their master bedroom so they weren't co-sleeping), and they put the baby in the living room in his own crib.

When the baby was 4 months old, they moved the toddler into the living room too (two cribs side by side), and they actually both slept better that way having a companion near! If you have any other questions about how they did it, I can ask her for you.

If it were me, I would give the toddler the bedroom for sleep and a play area and move you and your husband to an area of the living room. I would co-sleep with the new baby until your toddler and baby were both sleeping well enough to share the bedroom. I have never been in this situation, but live in a city with lots of small spaces so know several friends who have made it work! As it is, we only really have two usable bedrooms, so we will likely keep a new baby in our room for much longer than DD stayed with us.

If I were in your situation, I think I would set up the living room to be your bedroom and put the baby alone in the bedroom for now. Then once the baby is sleeping through the night a little more consistently, put your son in there with the baby and they can share the room. In any case, I think it's important to separate the kids as best as possible until the baby's long stretches of sleep are more established! Plus this way, during the baby's many naps, your son can be playing in the living room.

I was going to recommend what everyone else is saying - put the kids into the bedroom and you and DH sleep in the living room. It sounds kind of wacky, but this way you won't constantly be waking each other up when you go to bed at night.
