DS will be one a few weeks before Christmas and I have NO idea what to get him! I was thinking of a PBK Anywhere Chair? But I need a few other ideas bc family will ask!
I know some other November and December mamas are in the same boat...
What did you get your one year old??

A ride on/ push you was the best gift for our one year old. We have a fisher price one that plays loud music, which isn't everyone's taste, but that thing still gets played with two full years later. If he doesn't have one, a music/ activity table is good too. New water bottles and plates/ utensils? Maybe someone wants to buy a convertible car seat? 
My second will be one a week before Christmas, but big sisters birthday is in July. I'm thinking until she knows better we will try to do more of a half birthday and celebrate both in the summer. I'll also focus on some joint gifts- we already decided they are both getting a swing set for the backyard next summer.

DD turned 1 a week before Christmas! For her bday we got her a push car stroller and ball pit
Christmas: Small play kitchen!
I would say get a few things for now and a few toys they can grow into! Also tell family to get clothes if they ask!!!!!

! An activity table is a good idea. I'll look that up. He has a push zebra toy - is that what you mean? What's a ride on toy? Right now he only uses the zebra to practice standing!

i made an Amazon wish list that I'll send to you! And then we are also going to ask for swim lessons or a music class kind of thing that we can do all year with him. Maybe a membership to the children's museum?

We made wish lists on Amazon and at target to help guide family.
We did a play kitchen for the big gift.
Smaller gifts were useful items like cups, socks, and a booster seat. We also included toys for her to use sometime in the next year: quality wooden toys, puzzles, color wow markers and color wow paper pads.
Her aunt also got her a kids chair that she later loved.

We didn't do a gift for first bday and Christmas we just did little things. My mom got her an Anywhere Chair though for her first Chrsitmas and it is amazing- she's 3 now and has used it multiple times a day. It's still in great shape. So that's what we will get dd2 for her first Christmas

@wrkbrk: we use that ride on toy inside only (and live in a small condo so it's not like we have tons of space to ride). We have separate ride on things that she brings to the playground- a balance bike and a scooter- but got those later.

We got B a wagon and a tricycle - he turned 1 in January and was too little but by the time spring rolled around they were useful.

We've gotten a lot of great, larger toys from buy nothing and garage sales, so I just got her books and small stuff for her first birthday. My kiddo turned one last week, and current favorites are stacking toys of any sort, activity table, play kitchen (we don't have one, but my parents do, because they have more space), ride on toys, small baskets she can carry stuff in, fridge magnets, little people barn, wooden peg puzzles, and all books.
Family gave her books, clothes, bath toys, a ball pit, and dolls for her birthday. The cheap bath toys were above and beyond the favorites.

We did a play kitchen for her 1st birthday (Oct) and an anywhere chair for Christmas that year (actually, bought it through uglysofa.com and it was much cheaper). She is almost 3 and still uses both almost every day.
Other gifts she got around that age and used for a long time (I think close to a year) were an activity table and this ball popper.

We got H a play kitchen for her first Christmas and a walker for her birthday. She got a Nod chair for her second Christmas (I prefer the look to the Anywhere Chair and the colors are much brighter).

I'm making my daughter an activity board for her first bday in November. We are requesting no gifts for her bday as she has way too much stuff already and Christmas will be right around the corner.

Between Christmas and First Bday so far we are getting LO an B Zany Zoo activity cube, B Parum Parum drum & music set, Radio Flyer pull wagon, IKEA play kitchen, Pillow Fort bean bag chair, bath toys, fun(er) solid food supplies like animal face melamine plates, and tons of blocks/ building toys.
Here's my new obsession: bean bag chair!

Her birthday and Christmas were semi close together, we did play kitchen for one and a kitchen helper for the other. Both were some of the best investments we've made. We were given a slide and trampoline around then too and they have also been huge hits. All four took a little while before she was super into them but she used them all immediately.

I've been wondering the same thing! I asked for ideas and then put together an Amazon wish list. We decided to go with the anywhere chair for DD's birthday next month. We went to Pottery Barn Kids yesterday and to see what she would do with one. She had a good time climbing in and out of it and walking over to it and laying her head on the arm. We're thinking about a play kitchen for Christmas.

We won't buy her anything for her birthday or Christmas from us. But some things to ask for: musical instruments like maracas, books, blocks. We mostly like stuff that doesn't require batteries. Maybe a wagon. We asked for a bike trailer when our oldest turned one and she still fits in it (at 4).

@wrkbrk: they do look nice! There's 3 sizes: my first, regular, and oversized. The my first is tiny. We bought the regular. We didn't see an oversized in person, but based on the size of the regular I think it would be too big for a one year old.

DD's birthday is two weeks before Christmas. For first birthday and that Christmas she got a play kitchen, anywhere chair, various blocks, little people bus, musical instruments, lots of books, and other various small toys. Most of those gifts were from our family. She loved the chair from day one and still uses it daily. The play kitchen was ignored until about 18 months but it is now a favorite!
With a birthday so close to Christmas we try to ask for things that will be interesting for the whole year, it's actually a good thing to me that it took her awhile to warm up to some of the toys. It's helped keep her from losing interest in anything.

@youboots: Agree on the Little People barn- we got my DD the set when she was around one and she still plays with it a lot at almost 3. She also loved her indoor ride-on puppy dog and this Fisher Price singing chair thing.

I agree with @catgirl: that with a bday close to Christmas it's good to think ahead since there won't be another gift giving event for another full year. For instance my SIL got our late Nov baby a water table for her first bday and it was so nice 6 months later to have a new toy to pull out for summer.

As I was saying to my mom yesterday, my sons birthday is all year round. If he needs a bike, we buy it in the season he needs it, not for his December birthday or Christmas. So don't feel like you have to get it all in one part of the year!
What about a pass to a kids museum, aquarium, etc? If you are. Doing swimming, what about asking grandparents to gift those lessons? Those are gifts that take up no space and can be enjoyed all year.

We got the Anywhere chair, a Mountain Buggy Nano, Melissa and Doug skills boards and puzzles, a Cozy Coupe, a fold up slide, a Little People's set, lots of books, shoes in the next few sizes up, rain coat, rain boots, Melissa and Doug magnets for the fridge, the B. Meowsic cat keyboard, a bunch of Fisher Price toys like the doctors kit, camera, laptop, remote control, and an Elmo iPhone looking toy. Other things that might be helpful are travel booster seats, DVD player, kid headphones, fun DVDs, Magnatiles, MegaBlocks, plastic animal figurines, Tegu blocks, and EZPZ mats.
ETA we always ask for college fund contributions.

@gingerbebe: @junebugsmama: Hahaha omg we have this problem (my ILs only had boys so they looooooove to get girl stuff). We had to talk to them about limiting presents after Christmas last year- DD cried because she got overwhelmed with opening stuff when she just wanted to play with the first thing she got. This year they are only allowed to get her and the new baby ONE present and ONE book.
