I am 38 weeks pregnant and noticed that my baby had hiccups for the first time (that I noticed) two days ago. Then he had them again last night. I have read that this can be a sign of there being a knot in the umbilical cord.... has anybody experienced hiccups this late in pregnancy before and never noticed them before? This is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure what to expect, and google-ing things makes me paranoid. Thanks!

I've been feeling hiccups regularly for around 8 weeks now (I'm 34 weeks). I've never heard that it would be caused by any such issue. It's a natural result of the baby "practice breathing" and therefore inhaling amniotic fluid. I have them every day!

@xoxcmjxox: from weeks 37 on I had bi-weekly NSTs and BPP ultrasounds. One of the items they look for on the ultrasound is "practice breathing/lung movement", the tech told me that hiccups were the sign of a healthy baby getting ready to enter the world, working out the diaphragm/lungs. I had baby hiccups every single morning until I gave birth and then he got them as a newborn as well. I've never heard that about the cord being in a knot. I wouldn't trust Dr. Google.

I read that too and panicked and my doctor looked at me like I had three heads when I asked about. She told me hiccups mean your baby's developing well and they are nothing to worry about. Baby probably is just in a new position that allows you to feel the hiccups. My LO had then all the time near the end and she was perfectly healthy with no cord issues.

For peace of mind it it's never bad to check with your doctor/midwife, always go with your gut if you are concerned. My little guy had hiccups all the time in the third trimester though, I was never warned to be worried about it.

Thanks ladies! I figured it was normal, and my OB is out of town until after the new year so I figured I'd ask on here instead.
