Friends invited us over to swim and BBQ on the 4th - she asked me to bring brownies.
Should I bring a hostess gift as well? They are not drinkers so no alcohol.

What if you bring the brownies on a nice platter that is hers to keep?

It's nice to do but I'd say not expected in this case. If you're close enough she asked you to bring dessert, I'd say it more casual/ pot luck feeling than what would require a hostess gift. But I'm both lazy and hate getting "stuff" so take that with a grain of salt....

Nice but not expected. My friends and I all take turns hosting get togethers and we never buy hostess gifts. If it was a friend I wasn't close to and this is my first time at her house then I'd bring a gift.

I feel severely out of the loop. It would never occur to me to bring a gift to someone hosting a get-together - like @dolphin said we all host stuff at our various houses all the time, that would be so many gifts! We always just bring some food to contribute, unless specifically told not to bring anything. So I think you're fine with just the brownies.
I think the only time I've ever given a hostess gift was when someone was throwing a party for me, like a shower.

I agree that you probably don't need to bring anything other than the brownies, but flowers are always lovely!

If it's my friend I don't really bring anything. But if it was an acquaintance or a new friend I'd MAYBE bring something small. But I'll be honest I'm really bad at this so it's very likely it wouldn't occur to me and I'd prob just show up with the brownies.
Flowers are always nice.
Maybe cocktail/appetizer napkins or paper guest towels with their last name initial (can get these anywhere, they are just a single letter so it's not actual personalization) tied in a nice bow.
A nice bag of coffee from a local joint.
But I honestly think it's not a huge deal and I wouldn't even think twice if someone came with only brownies. That's nice enough.

We give gifts if it's like a housewarming party. We like to bring something, typically... so usually alcohol or dessert. She already asked u to bring brownies, so I say nothing else.

For a get together like you describe I would just bring the requested brownies and an extra item like beer/wine or an easy appetizer/snack or iced tea/cocktail/mocktail. I brought blueberry lemonade to a bbq recently and that was a hit.

For a casual bbq I wouldn't. In most cases, I'd bring booze, but if that's off the table, just the brownies.
