For those who have traveled, did you use a crib provided by the hotel? Are they clean and good to use or should I buy a travel crib?

I've used a hotel crib before, but I always bring a sheet and mattress pad from home. I read it helps the kids to feel less disrupted.
eta: I also wipe it down with a wet washcloth, just because I feel better.
I am actually in the process of buying a travel crib now, so we can use it at a house we are renting in May. So, if you think you might be in the situation of needing one for a place that doesn't have a crib, I'd get one.

@looch: I'll definitely wipe it down and bring my own linens! I know it can vary widely from each hotel but I just wanted to get a general sense if people use them or not. The hotel we're looking at says we can reserve one upon booking our room but I am also feeling paranoid that what if they don't have it available when we actually check in. But we'll also get there early enough in the day, that we could run to a store and buy one - worst case scenario ...

We brought the pack n play. The thought of using a hotel crib freaks me out, but if I had to use one I would bring all my own linens and wipe that sucker down (I wipe the entire shopping cart and would rather carry DS then place him in a cart without the seat cover).

We always bring the pack n play. I figure we have it so we might as well use it. But the first time we traveled was to Fort Wilderness, Disney cabins. And of course when we opened the closet we saw the same exact pack n play that we lugged all the way there.
I think really it depends on the hotel for me. If it was a nice hotel I'd trust it more then if we were staying somewhere cheap.

We're travelling next week and we can't bring our p'n'p and will see how the hotel crib works out! Or, we might try co-sleeping. *sigh*

Just a fyi - if your staying in a Marriott, Hilton or Sheraton chain when they say crib it's actually a pack n play. If they seem dirty to you, you can just request another one. I've done this and they usually just end up bringing you a brand new one. Its worth a shot.
At the Ritz, and Four Season I've gotten a crib on casters, just white metal but they are not full size cribs, more like the daycare sized portable crib so if your baby is closer to 2 or a just a bigger baby its a tight fit.
We just end up bringing portable bed rails and putting them up on one of the beds for them.

We've used a hotel crib twice. I bring a sheet from home, but otherwise I don't worry about it. (Once it was a crib, once it was a PnP) LO seems to have weathered both experiences perfectly fine

We travelled for a few weeks in the US last year. We didn't bring a portable cot as the amount of gear we were bringing was a nightmare. We had a mix of metal cots and portable cots supplied by hotels. They were all fine, all super clean. We were staying in fairly nice hotels in larger cities though. We used the hotel linens - again, too hard to cart around. Most of the time it was the usual white hotel linens. One place did put a very pretty bumper on the cot which surprised me. I took it straight off.

We haven't had any problems with using hotel cribs, but we do bring my own sheets and blankets. If we're traveling by car, we usually pack in our bjorn travel crib - it packs pretty compact. I wouldn't even mind flying with it if I had to.

@Andrea: I have these http://www.amazon.com/Regalo-HideAway-Extra-Long-Portable/dp/B0044UFG7E/ref=pd_sbs_ba_29 and it fits in a 26" suitcase.

I usually just take out pack n' play but I did use the provided pack n' play once because we were traveling by ferry onto an island & didn't want to carry that as well as everything else. I just made sure it was sturdy, wiped it down, brought our own sheet for it, etc. It worked out great actually

The hotel cribs we've used were really pack n plays and are never clean enough. We bought a Peapod Plus and use that when we travel, that or we co-sleep.

I have to say, sometimes the nicer hotels are shockingly unkempt. I can't even tell you how many times I've been surprised at the uncleanliness of the room at the Ritz, Four Seasons, etc.
We've got a bed rail that is all plastic and mesh that we plan to use when our son is a bit bigger, not sure how we'll manage the logistics of 3 open sides in a hotel bed with only one rail, but we'll see!

We've used a hotel-provided PNP once. It was clean but clearly very old. We did bring our own sheet. But I can't recommend the Bjorn travel crib highly enough for frequent travel.

@Red: @Mrs. Yoyo: are your travel cribs small enough to fit into suitcases? we are going to be flying and checking in luggage.

The Bjorn would have to be checked by itself (we've done this, the travel case is nice) unless you have a larger bag where you can spare the real estate (you can see the size of it folded up on Amazon). The Pea Pod might be smaller, but no personal experience with it.

Yes, we packed it in our larger suitcase (slightly bigger than a roll-on luggage). If you get the Peapod Plus, you may need to have her sleep in it a few times to get use to it first though....unless she likes playing in tents, in which case, she might think it's cool to sleep in a child-size one.
Also, instead of putting the inflated mattress in the mattress slot, we put a crib sheet over it and place it directly inside the tent. Much less noisy and more comfortable for baby.

@Red: what's your sleep routine when using the peapod? do you put your LO in awake?

@looch: Yes, definitely put her in awake. We do the same routine as at home. She cried the first few times we put her in it but she slept every time and eventually stopped crying when we put her in it. It's much easier to get them used to it when they're not mobile cause she did try to get out, lol. It's actually a pretty comfortable air mattress.

We're in the market for a travel crib and I just don't know how I'll manage the actual sleep time, so glad to hear it's just like home!
