My 4 year old recently asked me this question. I felt unprepared because I didn't think he would ask so young. He asked if they cut my belly, and I told him yes because they did. Then he asked if they cut it for his brother (they didn't), so that's what tripped me up. Because I'm an awesome mom I told him that his dad saw better than I did so we should ask him lol.

Hahah DD and I talked about it when she was 3. She knows how she and her bro came out of me. She actually brought it up during lunch today. Lol.

My DD is 3 1/2 and her little brother just arrived a month ago, so this is a hot topic. She thinks the doctor put the baby in me and then we went to the hospital and the doctor took him out. She hasn't asked beyond that so we are leaving it there for now!

I got this question a few times from my 4/5 year old students last year when I was pregnant. They were very concerned with how the baby was going to come out! I just said that the doctor would take him out at the hospital and that was enough for them, thank goodness. I did have one kid say, "How did that baby get in there? Did your husband put the baby seed in you?!" 
hahaha.

We talk about it a lot right now because she knows that the ouchie on my tummy is where the doctor took baby brother from and it's the reason I can't pick her up and chase after her just now. I think it is a lot easier to explain c-sections!

@Boogs: HAHA! honest mama. i'm the same with my 4yo. she was very curious about her brother growing in my belly and how exactly he came out. she saw on a commercial one time a woman holding a baby (the baby still wet and a little red from screaming) and it kind of scared her so i tried to be as honest as possible about what went down and explain how NORMAL it was. i think if a parent treats a situation like it's taboo or they appear afraid to explain, a 4 or 5 yo will pick up on that and get mixed signals.

I'm pregnant, and when our 2.5-year-old asked how the baby would get out, we just told him about his (vaginal) birth like it was no big deal. He was totally unfazed.

We have been talking about how they were both in my belly. When she asks how she gets out I'll explain in a non horrific way she came out of my vagina.

My LO asked around 2.5 because our friends were pregnant. She knew she had been in my belly. Now she likes to tell people that she didn't come out of my vagina because she was stuck and the doctor cut her out.

@sarac: it doesn't sound like anyone has lied, just given vague answers about doctors.
I haven't been asked but i think i would probably go with the doctor approach. Not sure though! maybe i will try to be more direct after reading some of these replies!

DD (2.5) said she thought baby sister was going to come out of my belly button. I said no but I don't recall what I actually said! I don't have a problem with saying she came out of my vagina but we'll see what I actually say when she's asking again.

I have to say, even though it was no big deal, this topic did introduce the word "vagina" to my son. He now likes to experiment with it.
"Mama, you're not a person."
"I'm not?"
"No, you're a girl." (Pause) "You have a vagina."
We clearly now need to work on our feminist grooming...
