She would drop it intermittently--she'd go to one nap for a few days, be tired, then do two naps to catch up, then one nap for a few days....then eventually just kept the after lunch nap. She's down around noon

Over the weekend we attempted one nap but by 930 he was laying on the floor face down... Was it a gradual push back?

My son is 16 months and has been on 1 nap since he was 11 months - which is really early but he kept showing signs of wanting to transition on his own.
For us, he just flat out started refusing his afternoon nap no matter what I did - his morning nap originally started at 930, so I just kept moving it later and later every morning. But I did it gradually - 10-15 min later everyday. Going down to 1 nap can be a long transition and there are definitely going to be rough days. I would also advise putting your LO to bed on the early side while he's transitioning. Otherwise he may get way overtired.
Good luck!!

Also, I just have to say, I love the fact that he has 1 nap now. It's so much easier to plan out our day and he takes one good 2-3 hour nap everyday. When before he would normally just nap for an hour or so.

No advice, just commiseration here. Ours skips the afternoon nap a couple times a week now or does a super short one. She's always crankier on one nap days than when she gets two naps. I'm nervous because she is transitioning to the toddler room at daycare in a month and they only take one nap every day. As inconvenient as the two naps are, I try really hard to make sure she gets two good ones on weekends so she's in a good mood!

@NurseDMB: similar process, though c was over a year. She was taking good morning naps but refusing the afternoon. I started pushing the morning back by maybe half an hour every few days. It did mean some days she woke up before noon and that was it for naps for the day/- long day! I just kept following her lead. She now takes one nap around one pm and usually sleeps 2-3 hours.

I shortened the first nap until it got to 45 minutes. Then we started skipping it and his one nap became a lot earlier. So instead of napping at 830 and 1:00 he takes one nap at 12. It was a really rough transition for us though, partially because I don't think he was ready and partially because of daylight savings and some sickness. I hope it goes more smoothly for you!!

We've been working on this transition for a week or 2 now. B is 16 months old and she's been showing signs of being ready to drop a nap, but still needing the same amount of nap time. So before she was napping 930-1030 and 130-230. I started pushing the first nap later by about 15 minutes a day, I'm hoping to eventually get a nap from around 11-130 or 12-230. So after pushing the first nap, I'd still give her the second nap if there was enough time in the afternoon ( I don't let her nap past 4.) The last few days I've been putting her down around 11 or 12, so then I haven't given the second nap. Today she napped for 2.5 hours, that was going down at 11. Now it's just finding the right time that works for her and then me keeping it consistent. It's pretty hard right now as I'm still working so she has a bunch of different babysitters during the week, so I need everyone to stay consistent with what I'm working on. I'm starting maternity leave at the end of the week so I'm really hoping by the end of next week we have a solid routine again.
From the researching I've done, depending on your baby, a good way to do it is to just push the first nap later until you get then going down at the new time you want, then dropping the second nap as they start to nap for longer periods.

My son is naturally transitioning himself to one nap most days. Some days he does really well and takes a 2 hour mid day nap but other days he gets a 10 minute car nap and thinks he's done napping then is a nightmare all afternoon and evening! Is it possible for your son to sleep later in the morning? That's what makes a difference for us usually up before 7= 2 naps and after 7= 1 nap.
