DS is 10 weeks and just started rolling from back to tummy. We had gotten into a decent sleep routine swaddling him in the Miracle Blanket for naps and night sleep – he’s done 6-8 hour stretches since 6 weeks, and we got a couple of 10-12 hour stretches starting last week. But now that he seems to have a single-minded obsession with rolling, we need to swaddle wean ASAP.

We’ve always rocked/bounced him to sleep and put him down in his crib when he’s fully asleep. However, trying to put him to sleep this way unswaddled has not been working – he will fight falling asleep in my arms despite all my best efforts at soothing him. We’ve tried the Merlin as well as just a sleepsack, it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I know he needs to learn how to fall asleep on his own, but how exactly do I do that? Putting him in the crib before he’s completely asleep (no matter how drowsy) always results in fussing/crying – is he too young for me to let him do this (i.e. is any amount of letting them fuss/cry by themselves considered CIO)? If so, what are my other options, since he will fight sleep/fuss/cry even in my arms? He doesn't take a paci or suck his thumb.

How did your LO learn to fall asleep on their own? How much fussing/crying did you tolerate, if any?
